The Carlos Corberan era at West Bromwich Albion got off to a bad start as the Baggies were beaten 2-0 by Sheffield United at The Hawthorns.

Goals from Iliman Ndiaye and Oli McBurnie within the first 23 minutes leave West Brom at the foot of the EFL Championship table.

Victory for Sheffield United lifted them up to fourth as Swansea could only manage a draw in the lunchtime kick-off and stopped the Blades six-match winless run.

Story of the match

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom made three changes to his side with McBurnie, Tommy Doyle and Ndiaye all returning to the starting XI, as Billy Sharp, Rhian Brewster and James McAtee were dropped to the bench, where they were joined by the fit-again Enda Stevens.

It took Sheffield United just seven minutes to fashion their first chance of the match. George Baldock won the ball back, but Oliver Norwood curled his shot high and wide.

Four minutes later, the Blades were in front as a first-time cross by George Baldock was missed by McBurnie, but Ndiaye was on hand, took one touch and found the bottom-right corner.

The Blades doubled their advantage when a five-man passing sequence from the back led to Ndiaye releasing McBurnie on the edge of the box and the Scotsman also beat Alex Palmer in the bottom-right corner.

West Brom pushed back and looked to generate attacking play through long throws from Darnell Furlong. Grady Diangana then tried his luck from distance and Adam Davies denied Matt Phillips.

Just before halftime, Ndiaye broke through the offside trap, but saw his shot deflected. The hosts forced a couple of late corners only to see McBurnie clear both.

At the start of the second half, West Brom had another opportunity through Karlan Grant, but Davies had no trouble dealing with the tame effort.

Ndiaye then hit the side-netting following a through-ball by Doyle, Norwood curled his strike inches wide and Doyle followed by blasting over from the angle.

The Blades made their first change of the afternoon, bringing on Brewster in place of Jack Fleck which allowed Ndiaye to drop into a deeper role.

Jayson Molumby went wide from distance and Grant couldn't make contact with a low cross from Phillips.

Brewster had to be replaced less than 15 minutes after coming on as he pulled up with a hamstring injury, Sharp taking his place. Baldock also came off for Jack Robinson.

Davies then had to be alert to beat away a shot from Molumby and Brandon Thomas-Asante missed a sitter for West Brom as Corberan has a lot of work to do to rescue the Baggies.

Player of the match: Iliman Ndiaye

He was in the right place at the right time for his goal, but showed terrific composure to finish. Ndiaye played a vital part in the Blades’ second, showing his strength, trickery and pace and could have had a second on a day when he was Sheffield United's best player.
