National League South side Chippenham Town have claimed a famous FA Cup win as the Bluebirds shocked League One Lincoln City 2-1 at Hardenhuish Park.

Joe Hanks scored the only goal of the match a minute before halftime as Chippenham reached the second round proper for the first time in their 149-year history.

Lincoln, who were denied repeatedly by the brilliant goalkeeping of Will Henry, were dumped out of the competition at the opening stage for the first time since the 2019-20 season.

Story of the match

Lincoln had the first chance of the match in the 12th minute as Ted Bishop headed Max Sanders' cross into the path of Charles Vernam, but Henry got down to save.

Two minutes later, the Bluebirds came close to opening the scoring when Alex Bray clipped the crossbar with a cross before Jordan Wright saved at his near post from Caine Bradbury.

The visitors had further chances to open the scoring, Lasse Sorensen seeing his shot from outside the area blocked and Freddie Draper's effort was also blocked behind for a corner.

On 26 minutes, Draper was played through only to see Harrison Minturn block and the subsequent corner was cleared by the hosts.

Vernham had an opportunity and at the other end, Harry Parsons made a fine run into the box only to see his shot deflected wide.

Wright then saved from Hanks, but the Chippenham frontman headed home at the far post in the 44th minute with a stunning backheel from a throw by Eddie Jones to put the sixth-tier outfit ahead.

Lincoln manager Mark Kennedy made one change at halftime, bringing on Tasman Oakley-Boothe for Sean Roughen.

The Imps turned up the pressure as Teddy Bishop saw his header saved brilliantly by Henry and he denied Bishop again, this time from close range after Regan Poole headed on Vernam's free-kick.

Matty Virtue and Sanders had further chances for the visitors in the 75th minute, but the Bluebirds cleared their lines both times.

Two minutes later, Lincoln thought they had equalized through Sanders, but referee Carl Brook ruled the goal out for a foul in the build-up play.

Joe Parker nearly doubled the hosts' advantage in stoppage time, but Wright did well to deny him, but it was of little consequence as Chippenham sealed a shock win.
