The Dutch will hope that they can cruise past a Qatar side that are yet to show any threat at their home tournament. Louis Van Gaal’s side can secure qualification for definite with a win, and it will calm a lot of nerves going into the knockout rounds.

Their most recent result was a 1-1 draw with Ecuador, with many saying they were lucky to come out of the game with a draw. Cody Gakpo scored their only goal, his second in two games at the competition.

Qatar have lost both of their games, the most recent coming at the hands of Senegal, where they were beaten 3-1. It was a convincing win for Senegal, however, Qatar did score their first goal – through Mohammed Muntari.

After not qualifying for the previous World Cup, The Netherlands came into this tournament with a generally young squad, with sprinkles of experience throughout providing a much-needed backbone for international tournaments. Viewers have been expecting a lot from them, and there is a general feeling of being underwhelmed. They scraped past Senegal with two late goals in Matchday 1 and drew to Ecuador in Matchday 2. If they want to be considered a potential winner, they are games that need to be won.

Team news – Netherlands

Memphis Depay is yet to start for Holland, due to an injury which has meant that two substitute appearances is all he's managed in Qatar. He could be looking at a position in the starting eleven, provided his fitness is up to standard.

Cody Gakpo, as mentioned, will be starting after his impressive record in front of goal so far. It is vital that he can step up again, if needed, to carry The Netherlands through.

Jurrien Timber started ahead of Matthijs de Ligt against Ecuador, and he will be hoping to hold onto that spot for the European’s last group game.

Whoever he picks, Van Gaal will be hoping that they can step up and secure the win they need with no slip-ups.

Team news – Qatar

Mohammed Muntari will feel as though his goal can earn him a start against Holland, despite them already being knocked out.

Almoez Ali will also be hoping to add to his 42 goals scored for Qatar, expect to see him starting up front.

Abdulaziz Hatem looked dangerous after coming on as a substitute last game, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him start in a game that allows for rotation.

Past meetings

These two teams have NEVER met before, so we don’t know exactly what to expect – The Netherlands should win fairly comfortably, but there have been some strange results at this World Cup.

Key Players

Netherlands – Cody Gakpo

As mentioned regularly already, Gakpo will be The Netherlands’ one to watch, and against a team like Qatar – he will be hopeful of grabbing a couple of goals, cementing his place in the Golden Boot race.

Qatar – Akram Afif

Afif has the most European pedigree and it's clear to see that from Qatar’s previous games, he moves better with the ball and has an extra yard of pace against his teammates. Despite not having a goal involvement to his name, he is key for Qatar if they want to get a result.
