West Bromwich Albion managed to score a late equaliser to ensure they took their FA Cup third-round tie with Chesterfield to a replay at The Hawthorns.

Brandon Thomas-Asante ensured revenge on the side that knocked his former team Salford City out of the trophy last season, as he bagged a brace.

Spireites winger Armando Dobra also scored twice, in a performance that came so close to stunning the world of football with a classic 'giant killing' tie.

Here are four things we learnt from the game.

  • Chesterfield spring surprises

Paul Cook's side were defeated by higher-tiered opposition in the third round last season, when they lost 5-1 to Premier League Chelsea.

But the Spireites were a matter of minutes away from pulling off a shock victory against second-tier Albion on Saturday.

They undoubtedly bridged the three divisions and 64 places that separated the two outfits heading into the clash.

Chesterfield executed their game plan to a tee.

Their aim was to overload Albion with an organised press and fast tempo in possession.

In doing so, Cook's side stifled the out-of-sorts Baggies, who only had four players in their starting lineup that had previously started a game under new boss Carlos Corberan.

The home side were unlucky to lose and bar the goals scored, they had other chances including one from Liam Mandeville - which was tipped round the post by David Button.

  • Albion's fringe players rough around the edges

11 changes were made to the side that beat EFL Championship rivals Reading on Monday, and it was telling.

Just four of the starting lineup chosen for the cup tie had made starts during Corberan's reign so far.

A trip away to National League opposition should have provided fringe players the opportunity to stake a claim for a starting spot as they look to get into the play-off places in the second tier.

But it was a risk that very nearly backfired as Albion appeared rocked by Cook's side throughout.

It was only when Corberan turned to his usual starters that the tie began to turn in their favour, with the likes of Jed Wallace, Okay Yokuslu and Daryl Dike used in order to try and swing the tie.

Still, it was a disappointing tie, and those fringe players may have to wait some time before next getting an opportunity under the Spaniard.

  • Dobra shows his talent

Former Ipswich Town and Colchester United prospect Dobra proved to be a real threat throughout the game against the Baggies.

And in doing so he continued his trend of scoring in every round of the FA Cup so far.

The Albanian was a persistent issue for the Albion defence and took advantage of his opposite number Taylor Gardner-Hickman being played in a slightly unfamiliar right-back position.

For his first of the afternoon he found space inside the opposition penalty area and struck home, followed by celebration in front of the raucous home supporters.

His second, a superb dinked effort, as Button's parried save found the only man in a blue shirt inside the penalty area - leaving Dobra to finish over the goalkeeper.

It is sure to be a performance that alerts those in higher tiers - could the winger bag himself a move after a triumphant FA Cup run?

  • Thomas-Asante saves the day

The former Salford and MK Dons forward has rotated with fellow striker Dike since Corberan was appointed, but found himself in the starting lineup for this one.

His promising performances in an Albion shirt so far have been built upon a bedrock of hard work and aggressive pressing.

But this particular showing showcased a different attribute - clinicality.

His first goal was a superb volleyed finish as he hit Karlan Grant's cross into the net from close range, an ambitious effort that would normally sail over the bar.

To seal his brace, a flicked header into the top corner of Ross Fitzsimmons' net after beating the offside trap.

Although Thomas-Asante was arguably lucky not to be sent off after his flailing arm hit a Spireites defender in the face - he was superb throughout and deserves full credit for his performance.
