The 2015/16 League One campaign got underway on Saturday, with newly promoted, relegated and familiar sides all looking to get off to a good start.

Gillingham top after game one

Gillingham top the table after game one, following a superb home performance against Sheffield United. The Gills were excellent from start to finish, and rutheless as they tucked away chances nicely to run out as 4-0 winners.

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be happy after their loanee Emmanuel Osadebe opened the scoring, before Adedeji Oshilaja, John Egan and Bradley Dack got in on the act.

Swindon Town are just behind Gillingham on goal difference, after they dismantled a poor Bradford side by four goals to one in their first match.

Indifferent start for the newly promoted sides

Burton Albion, Shrewbury Town and Bury were all looking to get a good start in their respective battles against the drop, following promotion from League Two last season, and all had different starts.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's much fancied Burton side showed the form that saw them crowned as Champions last season, dispatching of Scunthorpe in a 2-1 victory.

Things didn't go quite as well for Shrewsbury, who surrendered a 1-0 lead to Millwall, eventually going down 2-1.

Bury were the only of the three teams to begin with an away fixture, and will be fairly pleased after coming away from Doncaster Rovers with a solitary point to their name, drawing 1-1.

Relegated sides struggle to shine

Millwall's aforementioned triumph over Shrewsbury was the only fixure in which a side that was relegated from last season's Championship managed to triumph.

Wigan Athletic were poor in performance away at Coventry City, and deservedly walked away with no points after a 2-0 defeat. Newcastle United loanee Adam Armstrong scored a brace there.

Blackpool, who managed to string an 18 man squad together for their game, will be reasonably pleased after drawing 2-2 away at Colchester United. Mark Cullen, signed for £180,000 from Luton Town this summer, got both goals for the Tangerines.

The rest of the bunch

Elsewhere, Peterborough United failed to gain anything from their trip to Rochdale United, losing 2-0, whilst Chesterfield Town impressed during their 3-1 win over Barnsley.

There were 1-1 draws in the Fleetwood-Southend and Walsall-Oldham games, whilst Ben Garratt's heroics in goal ensured that Crewe Alexandra held on for a 0-0 draw at home to local rivals Port Vale.
