Middlesbrough romped to victory in the first match of their pre-season campaign with a 6-0 victory away to League Two side York City.
There were three goals in either half as a Boro side featuring a number of fringe and youth players got their pre-season preparations off to the best possible start.
Alex Baptiste, yet to make a competitive appearance for the club after breaking his leg in Boro's pre-season victory over York a year ago, started in defence with youngsters Bryn Morris and Alex Pattison also given the opportunity to impress.
De Pena and Nugent with quick-fire double
It took twenty minutes for the first goal of the afternoon to hit the back of the net, but a second soon followed as Boro made their quality tell.
First, Albert Adomah's cross from the right was turned in by Carlos de Pena via a deflection from the goalkeeper, before David Nugent turned in a rebound after seeing a shot saved just a few moments later.
However, soon after there was a blow for Boro as left-back James Husband had to be taken off clutching his arm in some pain. George Friend was brought on as his replacement.
Just after the half-hour mark, Boro had their third. Adomah took the ball forward and exchanged passes with Nugent, setting himself up for a simple finish.
Rhodes at the double in second half
Again, it took around twenty minutes of the half for Boro to break their opponents down and find another goal. It was a good one, as Jordan Rhodes controlled a ball in the area with his chest with his back to goal, swivelled and slammed a low shot past the goalkeeper.
De Roon went close to a debut goal but saw his shot blocked, before Adam Reach scored the pick of the goals. He was sent clear through on goal and, with the keeper coming out to meet him, looped in a delightful lob from 25 yards to make it five.
Rhodes completed the rout on 87 minutes with his second of the afternoon, turning home a low cross after York's Matty Dixon had shuddered the woodwork with a powerful shot from range.
Boro confirm European friendly
With six goals, some good performances and only one injury, manager Aitor Karanka will be satisfied with his side's start to pre-season.
Before the game, the club also confirmed that they will welcome La Liga side Real Sociedad to the Riverside for a friendly clash on Saturday August 6, with a 2pm kick-off.
