Sunderland's top scorer, Jermain Defoe, believes a positive attitude from the team will help keep the club in the Premier League.

No point to prove

It was an interesting game at the weekend for Defoe as he was dropped for the trip to Southampton in favour of Fabio Borini, who scored the last-minute equaliser in their previous game, a 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace

Therefore, they may have been a point to prove for Defoe but he made the most of his chance off the bench and scored what should have been a winner in the 85th minute, only for the defence to allow a Virgil Van Dijk stoppage-time leveller to deny the Black Cats three crucial points against a team who were playing with 10 men.

Taking the positives

It would be easy to be downbeat for Defoe and his team-mates following such a cruel ending at St Mary's, but the former Tottenham Hotspur man would rather not dwell on the negatives as he told local media that he believes that "from now until the end of the season" Sunderland "will win a few games" because of the way they are playing and the players they have.

The former England man proclaimed that he thought the Black Cats "played well, created chances" before stating that, at "the next game's a massive game". Defoe was, of course, referring to the Tyne-Wear derby in just under two weeks, which could effectively be the loser goes down type of game.

Strength of the squad

Former FC Toronto striker Defoe was also keen to comment on how strong he thinks the squad is and the fact it's more than good enough to get them out of trouble by saying that signings, such as winter arrivals Wahabi Khazri and Lamine Kone, have lifted the squad.

Although disappointed to draw, that point was good enough to put Sunderland clear of the relegation zone just ahead of Newcastle United and Norwich City, however, these two will play again before Sunderland play the Geordies.

Derby preparation

Former Portsmouth forward Defoe has also given an insight into how Sunderland will be preparing for their season-defining derby match at Newcastle. Defoe revealed that the players will "have a full week training to get the work in and prepare for the derby" and that "it's a good opportunity to put the work in and do stuff in the gym".

Then Defoe concluded that "sometimes, when you play two games in a week, you can't do certain things because it's just play, recover and play". Defoe has been so crucial to Sunderland this season and they'll hope he can pop up again before the campaign is out and add to his 14 goals to fire the Wearsiders to another relegation escape.
