Sunderland are edging ever closer to making a breakthrough in the transfer market as Everton youngsters Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway close in on a switch to Wearside.

The pair would arrive on season-long loan deals with Aiden McGeady also on Simon Grayson’s radar.

Loans and permanent deals

McGeady, however, would be the Black Cats first permanent summer signing as the Championship side hope to secure his services for around £2 million.

The winger enjoyed a successful loan spell with Grayson last season – winning the player of the year award at Preston.

Like McGeady, Browning played his trade at Deepdale last campaign and can play centre-back or right-back. Browning has featured nine times for Everton and has also played for Wigan Athletic.

Fellow Toffee Galloway, was playing in England’s top tier for West Bromwich Albion albeit the 21-year-old only made three appearances.

Grayson is also interested in bringing Norwich star Jonny Howson to the Stadium of Light after the midfielder rejected a new contract at Carrow Road, although Middlesbrough are looking the most likely to tie up a deal.

Howson played under Grayson at Leeds United, making over 200 appearances for the club.

Sunderland have found it difficult to attract new recruits this window with Grayson only being appointed as manager on Friday.

It could prove to little too late for Sunderland on the Howson front with Middlesbrough set to spend £5 million on the player.

Howson’s former club Leeds United, are also said to be interested although the price tag and wages have proved to be a stumbling block for the West Yorkshire club.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is another player who has been linked with a move to the North East but Sunderland will face tough competition to land him. The Chelsea midfielder played just 32 minutes for the Blues last season and could leave Stamford Bridge in search for more first team football.

Goalkeeper Rob Green has also been linked with a move to Wearside.
