Dundee United have entered talks to take Wigan Athletic striker, Billy McKay, back to the Scottish Premier League

McKay, 26, joined Wigan from Inverness CT in January for a fee of £150,000, but has failed to settle at the Latics and is expected to complete to Tannadice in the coming days.

Dundee United's Nadir Ciftci joined Celtic last week for £1.5-million, leaving United boss Jackie McNamara short of a proven goalscorer. He believes McKay is the man to lead the line next season.

Last season while, at Inverness, McKay scored 10 goals in 23 games before moving to Wigan at the back end of the January transfer window.

The Northern Irish international is keen to kickstart his career again after a frustrating six months at the DW Stadium. And the idea of missing out on a potential trip to France and Euro 2016 is one that he dare contemplate  having been a regular start in Northern Ireland's qualifying campaign so far.

Gap already filled

The void left by McKay leaving has already been filled by a fellow Northern Irishman.

Today Wigan announced the signing of Brentford, and ex-Walsall striker, Will Grigg for a fee Sky Sports are reporting to be £1-million on a three-year deal.

Boss, Gary Caldwell talked about Grigg  being a "proven goalscorer" at League One level mentioning the "superb season" he had last year while on loan at MK Dons where he scored 20 goals in the League as the Dons were promoted.

Grigg is the eighth new signing for Caldwell as he looks to bounce back from relegation at the first time of asking in his first managerial position.

He is also the third striker brought in with Craig Davies, Oriol Riera, and Andy Delort all joining the Latics with the latter two joining on season-long loans.
