Wigan Athletic have signed goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen on a one-year deal.

The 40-year-old, who made over 400 Premier League appearances, was released by West Ham in the summer.

Latics manager Stephen Caldwell described him to the club's website as "consistently one of the best keepers in the Premier League" and said the Finnish keeper was "still in fantastic condition". He also said his experience would be "invaluable on and off the park".

Almost two decades in English football

Jaaskelainen first moved to England in 1997 when he joined Bolton Wanderers from Vaasan Palloseura for £100k.

He quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper and stayed with the Trotters until their relegation to the Championship in 2012.

He then joined West Ham United where he reunited with old boss Sam Allardyce and again established himself as the first-choice in his first season.

He was then eased out in the 2013-14 season to make way for Spanish goalkeeper Adrian.

He first made his international debut for Finland in 1998 against Malta but he had to settle as second-choice to Antti Niemi for seven years until the former Southampton keeper retired and he was able to take the number one shirt for five years.

A likely second-choice keeper

He is Wigan's 12th summer signing, joining Donervon Daniels, Craig Morgan, David Perkins, Richard O'Donnell, Max Power, Sanmi Odelusi, Craig Davies, Will Grigg, Reece James, Michael Jacobs and Kevin McNaughton.

He should play a bit-part role at the club with O'Donnell, recently signed from Walsall, expected to be the first-choice.

Lee Nicholls, who has spent several loan spells away from the DW, could stake a claim as the second-choice after spending last season on the bench.

Wigan made a poor start to their first season back in League One since 2002-03 as they lost 2-0 to Coventry City.

Tonight they are League Cup action against fellow League One side Bury at the DW Stadium.
