Wolverhampton Wanderers pair Björn Sigurðarson and Georg Margreitter have been informed by manager Kenny Jackett that they are both surplus to requirements at Molineux.

Icelandic international Sigurðarson and former Austria U-21 international Margreitter both joined Wolves in 2012 under then-manager Stale Solbakken, as the Norwegian made his mark in the Midlands.

Sigurðarson's Wolves career went downhill fast

24-year-old Sigurðarson joined the Championship side from Norwegian first division side Lillestrøm for a fee of £2.4m, where the striker netted 17 times in 70 league appearances.

Despite being a first-team regular at the start of his Wolves career, he soon dropped out of the team and was sent out on loan to Norwegian club Molde and Danish giants FC Copenhagen, where he reunited with old boss Solbakken.

26-year-old defender Margreitter signed from Austrian outfit Austria Wien for a fee of £500,000, but both heand Sigurðarson have been informed by Jackett that their futures lay elsewhere.

Speaking to the Shropshire Star, Jackett commented on the imminent departures of Sigurðarson and Margreitter, saying that neither player was likely to feature in his first-team plans in the near future.

Both players must now move on

Jackett pointed to Sigurðarson's recent operation on a back injury, saying that he would now be moving on to "a period of six weeks' rehab". Margreitter, meanwhile, has been passed "fully fit" and has "trained well and hard" since he returned for pre-season training.

The manager went on to speak about his side's strength in depth in central defensive positions, with "good young centre-backs" blocking Margreitter's path to the first team. Jackett said the defender was now looking for "his next challenge" and would move on shortly.

Once the pair’s departures are confirmed, they will join Jake Cassidy, Roger Johnson and Sam Ricketts in leaving Molineux this summer.

A quiet summer at Molineux

So far, in terms of incomings, the Black Country side have been quiet, with the signing of Conor Coady from Huddersfield for an undisclosed fee being their only new addition so far.

Jackett will be aiming to build a team capable of challenging for promotion after they just missed out on the play-offs last campaign.
