Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards has signed a new contract with the Championship club.

The Welshman's previous deal was set to expire at the end of the current campaign. However, after signing his new contract, Edwards will remain at Wolves for an extra year.

Edwards has gone onto make over 200 appearances for Wolves since signing from Luton Town in 2008. He's also appeared 27 times for the Wales national side, scoring his three goals against Liechtenstein, Azerbaijan and Scotland.

Wolves hunting for glory

With Wolves looking for another promotion, keeping Edwards fit and in the team will be vital. After narrowly missing out on the play-offs last season Wolves have immediately been installed as the early season promotion favourites. Edwards was a key figure for Wolves in their three years in the Premier League which ended in 2012. Now at the age of 29, Edwards will be eager to get back to playing at the top level.

The Championship season is a marathon, not a sprint, so when speaking to the Wolves official website, Edwards was delighted with his one year extension.

He described the club as a "huge one" with "big ambitions", and claimed that he was "proud" to be a part of Kenny Jackett's side. He also said he was delighted with the added layer of career security afforded him by his extra year, adding that he feels he is currently "playing to the best of my career" in terms of his impact on games through goals and assists.

Jackett delighted to have Edwards on board

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett is also delighted with Edwards dedicating another year of his career to the club.

"I'm delighted that Dave has extended his contract, he's been a key player in my time here with some fantastic performances and some vital goals.

"With so many younger players around Dave's experience and leadership are going to be vital for the coming season.

"He got eight goals last year and he'll be wanting a role in the team where he can get in the box on a regular basis."

Wolves started off their season with an impressive yet controversial 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers, and with Edwards now fully committed, they can make that big push for the play-offs or maybe even more.
