Aston Villa have been handed a home draw against local rivals Birmingham City in the Capital One Cup third round, following their victory over Notts County on Tuesday evening.

Scott Sinclair's hat-trick ensured that Villa would progress to this stage, whilst Birmingham saw off the challenge of Gillingham to set up this mouth-watering tie.

Local rivals that can't get much closer

Villa Park and St Andrews, the stadia owned by each team, stand just 3.5 miles apart, with the two teams having been fierce rivals for a number of years.

Something that adds to the prospect of the Second City derby, named as such due to Birmingham being the second city of the United Kingdom, is the fact that the teams haven't met for over four years.

Birmingham's relegation from the Premier League in the 2010/11 season saw them split up, with neither having changed divisions since. This has meant that the last fixture between the sides ended in a draw, with a 1-1 tie being played out in February 2011.

The last game in this competition was in that same season, with Birmingham triumphing 2-1 in December 2011, to progress into the semi final. They would go on to win the League Cup that season, which softened the blow of relegation.

An enticing September for Villa

September's game will mark the end of a run of derby matches for Villa, with Tim Sherwood's side scheduled to come up against both West Brom and Leicester City in the weeks prior to the game.

An away game against high-flying Leicester starts the month, before Villa host West Brom, hoping to triumph against another of their bitter rivals. Birmingham will present the next challenge, before September ends with a daunting away trip to Liverpool.

The tie will be played in the week commencing September 21st.
