Before kick off Villas-Boas had stressed that today’s game would be about continuing his teams good run of form rather than exacting any personal vendetta against his former employees. But for a point during the second half it looked like he was going to achieve both goals as his team led 2-1.  Sadly for the Tottenham manager  Juan Mata decided to turn up for the second half and everything slipped away for the home side.

Gary Cahill put The Blues ahead with a brilliant goal after just seventeen minutes. Edin Hazard had swung in a corner that William Gallas poorly headed away. The ball came to Cahill who placed a magnificent first time volley past Brad Friedel. Chelsea kept up the pressure in the first half and should have got a second when Mata had two successive shots; the first blocked by Friedel and the other sloppily off-target.

Whatever AVB said to his team at halftime certainly motivated them and they came out swinging in the second half. Ex-Chelsea defender William Gallas got his first goal for Spurs after getting a glancing shot from Jan Vertonghen’s pass. Jermaine Defoe then put the home side ahead in the 54th minute when he converted Aaron Lennon’s cross. It was Defoe’s 200th goal of his career.

However just as Tottenham had been galvanised after going behind, it was now Chelsea's turn to do the same. This resulted in Mata getting two goals in three minutes, the first after another poor Gallas clearance and then another after linking up well with playmaker Edin Hazard.

Late in the game Chelsea added a fourth goal to make the score-line appear slightly more one sided than the game actually was. Mata provided the pass for substitute Daniel Sturridge for his first goal of the season.

The result means unbeaten Chelsea remain top of the table with 22 points. Tottenham sit in fifth with 14 points.
