Liverpool reached Wembley for the second time this season as they beat Stoke City 2-1 in the FA Cup quarter finals at Anfield.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring for Liverpool in the first half with a fantastic placed finish into the bottom corner from outside the area.

Stoke, last year's runners up, kept fighting and equalised before half time as Peter Crouch stooped to head in a controversially awarded corner.

But Liverpool responded well into the second half and Stewart Downing grabbed his second goal of the season to send his team into the semi-final to play either Everton or Sunderland.

It will be the second match at the 90,000seated stadium this season after winning their first silverware for six years by beating Cardiff City on penalties in the Carling Cup Final.

Stoke pressured Liverpool superbly in the first half and thoroughly deserved to go into the break level at 1-1 but after Downing drilled past Thomas Sorensen they struggled to regain a foothold in the match.

Liverpool lacked their usual passing style which Kenny Dalglish has instilled throughout his tenure during the early part of the match.

Halfway through the first 45 minutes Suarez asserted himself on the match.

He exchanged well with Maxi Rodriguez inside the Stoke half before firing off an impeccable shot into the bottom corner.

Stoke responded well and equalised when Crouch scored his first goal against Liverpool since leaving them for £7million in 2007.

He lost his marker, Andy Carroll, and met a Matthew Ethrington corner giving Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina no chance.

But, controversy surrounded the goal as Liverpool, supported by video replays, protested that the previous corner had been headed out by a Stoke City player for a goal kick and not the resultant corner.

Jonathan Walters then went close for the away team but struck a powerful shot waywardly wide when played through on goal by Dean Whitehead.

Liverpool came out for the second half a better outfit and tested Sorensen in the Stoke goal witha few efforts on goal.

Their pressure turned eventually told as Downing benefited from a lucky deflection of Steven Gerrard’s back heel to break into the area before smashing a left-footed shot into the back of the net.

Both sides struggled to create any clear-cut goal scoring opportunities towards the end of the match as Liverpool held on to reach Wembley and a potential match with local rivals Everton.

Chelsea will play either Tottenham or Bolton in the other semi-final after they beat Leicester City 5-2.
