Liverpool have today confirmed that youngster Sheyi Ojo has joined Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

Ojo, who has been in sensational form for the U21s this year, is highly thought of amongst coaches in the Reds' youth set-up and was recently called to the first-team a number of times.

He was called up to the bench against Burnley on Boxing Day and was also on the sidelines for the 2-2 draw at home to Leicester City, but has yet to make his debut for Liverpool.

The explosive 17-year-old winger joined the Merseyside club from Milton Keynes Dons for £2 million back three years ago and the Reds believe gaining regular first-team football is the best.

Wigan currently sit 23rd in the Championship, without a win in four, and it is hoped by both parties that Ojo will gain valuable experience at the DW Stadium.

Wigan boss Malky Mackay, whom Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is known friends with, said: “I spoke to Brendan at length about Sheyi and we both agreed that this is the next stage of his development. He sees him as a Liverpool player of the future and will take him into his squad in the summer," said the ex-Cardiff City boss.

"We both hope that his time at Wigan Athletic can be a productive one for both parties. I have watched him and was excited by what I saw in terms of his pace, touch and awareness. Now it’s a question of integrating him with our squad and managing his progress carefully.”
