Liverpool’s soon to be permanent captain will be without a contract in little over 12 months, with no sign of a new one.

24-year-old Jordan Henderson was announced as the club's vice-captain back in September following the departure of defender Daniel Agger in the summer, and has recently put in a number of stellar performances whilst wearing the armband with Steven Gerrard out with a hamstring injury.

Talks of a long-term deal in November last year proved unsuccessful after Liverpool rejected an £80,000 deal.

It’s understood the offer to Henderson was a rise of £15,000 a week, the club operating a relatively strict salary system. It's now been a four-month gap in negotiations, which has led to speculation that the midfielder could actually leave as a free agent next season.

Liverpool’s long serving captain Steven Gerrard announced his departure to MLS side LA Galaxy at the end of the season. Leaving Henderson the task of filling the boots of a legend, which means it would be a huge loss if Henderson was to leave too.

Now, the question is, “Would he really leave?” Although Henderson has showed no signs of a move, there’s no doubt rival clubs will be keeping a close eye on him.

Liverpool’s stand-in captain has led the team to victory in the Barclays' Premier League and FA Cup. Liverpool are the league’s only unbeaten side of the year, picking up 30 points from a possible 36 in 2015 and winning seven of the last eight matches with six clean sheets.

The England midfielder scoring in successive league matches, maintaining their pursuit for a Champions League finish. has been a vital part of the side's revival.

Henderson's role cannot be understated in Brendan Rodgers team. Since joining from Sunderland in 2011, he has 174 appearances for the club since and his transformation has been noticed by many.

Blackburn Rovers captain Matt Kilgallon praised Henderson’s turnaround as the two sides met in an FA Cup quarter-final clashFirst meeting Henderson as a teenager when they were both at Sunderland. Kilgallon said, “He will end up being a top captain for Liverpool. He’s got everything there and just maturing as a player. It’s nice to see him doing well”.

Whether Jordan Henderson will really leave is unlikely, and if he does not sort out a contract before the end of the season, it would be a surprise not to see him sign an extension in the summer.

Could Henderson become the next Liverpool legend? Lets hope he puts pen to paper soon.
