Jordan Henderson will officially succeed Steven Gerrard as the new captain of Liverpool Football Club, it has been confirmed.

The 35-year-old former skipper, having had the armband since October 2003, left to see out his final playing days in the sunshine of Los Angeles last month, which opened the door for Henderson to take up the role.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who replaced Daniel Agger as the club's vice-captain this time last year and only recently signed a new contract to make him one of the highest earners - deputised a number of times for Gerrard last season, briefly maintaining an impressive unbeaten streak in his place.

He performed admirably during those performances, displaying the kind of leadership the Reds often lacked throughout the course of the campaign, and due to his incredible maturity over the years at the club - is now set to be tasked with helping to lead the side into a huge 2015-16 season.

Henderson always the favourite for the armband

He has long been linked with the armband, with Gerrard's departure being made official back in January, and has repeatedly uttered his desire to do so, insisting: "It would be an absolute honour to be captain, I would love it."

Whilst Brendan Rodgers originally refused to comment on whether Henderson would become the new club captain last season, with his future at Anfield having since been settled - the two parties conducted talks to sort out the formalities for the no.14 to succeed Gerrard.

It is the latest rung on the ladder in what has been a long climb to prominence for Henderson. Having rejected the opportunity to leave for Fulham in the summer of 2013, he has since kicked on to become one of the key players in Rodgers' side.

Henderson excelled as the Reds came close to winning the title two years ago and was equally as pivotal last year - scoring a career-best six league goals and recording nine assists though Liverpool could only muster a sixth-placed finish.

Vice-captaincy now available

Martin Skrtel and new man, James Milner, were other potential options for the armband - but Henderson's ever-growing influence and development has instead been rewarded.

The switch will however leave the vice-captaincy available, with experienced duo Skrtel and Lucas Leiva - now the longest-serving players in the squad - under consideration, as is commanding centre-back Mamadou Sakho and recent arrival Milner.
