Liverpool survived a scare against Carlisle United, with Adam Bogdan's heroics in goal helping them go through to the League Cup fourth round on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Danny Ings had given Liverpool the lead after 24 minutes, however it didn't last for too long, as Derek Asamoah levelled the scores around 10 minutes later.

Despite being on top for the remainder of the evening, the Reds couldn't find that second goal, and had to settle for progression via the penalty shoot-out.

An under pressure Brendan Rodgers certainly didn't hold back in terms of selecting a strong starting 11, with league regulars such as Nathaniel Clyne, Martin Skrtel and James Milner all selected.

Adam Bogdan made his debut in goal, whilst Joe Allen returned to the team in centre midfield following a period out injured.

Liverpool did start commandingly, dominating possession and putting Carlisle under pressure with a host of early shots.

Roberto Firmino hit one wide from distance, before Alberto Moreno and Allen both forced 'keeper Mark Gillespie into fairly comfortable saves, shooting at him with little power.

Danny Ings, full of confidence after scoring in Sunday's draw against Norwich, was the next to go close, forcing Gillespie to beat away his shot straight to Milner, who headed the rebound over.

There was some action at the other end, with French midfielder Bastien Hery driving into the Liverpool half, only to strike well over the top of Bogdan's goal.

Ings heads the Reds ahead

Despite that effort, pressure did eventually pay off for the Reds, as that man Ings put them ahead just past the 20 minute mark. Running onto a cross from Adam Lallana, Ings connected well with the ball at the back post, heading in unchallenged to make it 1-0.

Dejan Lovren, who scored his first Liverpool goal against Swansea in this competition last season, almost doubled the lead, heading Milner's corner narrowly over the bar. That was followed up by another header going close, Ings nodding wide from Alberto Moreno's whipped ball in.

In vain of Liverpool's dominance, it was Carlisle who scored the second goal of the game - a shock equaliser coming 10 minutes short of half-time.

Carlisle peg the favourites back

The aforementioned Hery was given far too much time to pick out Derek Asamoah on the counter-attack, and Asamoah made no mistake in racing into the box before sliding his effort underneath Bodgan at his near post.

Divock Origi, who had replaced the injured Roberto Firmino towards the end of the first half, had the first big action of the second, seeing a powerful shot pushed away by Gillespie in the corner.

Ings and Origi both went on to miss good chances from close range in the next 10 minutes, however those efforts were overshadowed by an inexplicable attempt to score from Skrtel - the Slovakian shooting well over from over 30 yards out.

Second half onslaught comes to nothing

As the clock ticked on, it was increasingly looking like a salvo as Liverpool continued to bombard the Carlisle goal with shots. Lovren had a pop from 40 yards, one which was much better than Skrtel's, ending up on target.

That came just after another missed chance from Origi, with him unable to get the required power on Emre Can's cross. Things were getting so desperate that Philippe Coutinho was called from the bench, replacing Allen with around 25 minutes to go.

Pots shots aplenty were the theme of the evening and continued, with Coutinho getting stuck into the action by firing an effort wide, before Lallana failed to convert his volley from the Brazilian's cross.

The underdogs did produce enough on the counter-attack in the dying minutes to worry Liverpool, but nothing came of their crosses, and the tie was extended into extra time.

Extra time yields no more goals

It was the away side who enjoyed the best of the first half of extra time, with the best chance going there way when Hery played in Jabo Ibehre. However, the inform striker saw his effort beaten away by Bogdan.

Up at the other end, substitute Jordon Ibe found Milner, who had a shot saved before Origi's rebound flew over the bar.

With the whistle having blew for the final 15 minutes, Ibe again was the creator as his corner found Lovren, only for the centre back to head over.

That proved to be Lovren's last significant act of the match, as the Croatian was forced off on a stretcher just minutes before the whistle blew for penalties.

Hosts scrape through on penalties

James Milner took, and scored the first spot-kick, before Bogdan saved Danny Grainger's tame effort to give the Reds an early advantage.

The next two penalties were all scored, with the highlight of which being Emre Can's delightful chip, which fell just under the crossbar.

Carlisle got a chance to regain their momentum when Adam Lallana saw his effort saved, but couldn't take it as Bogdan pushed Luke Joyce's effort around the post.

Coutinho was next up, but missed his, meaning the League Two side had another chance to level up, doing so as Alex McQueen put his penalty right into the top corner.

With the score at 2-2, it was effectively into sudden death, meaning that Ings did extremely well to score the next - under huge pressure.

This meant that Hery had to score, but couldn't, with Bogdan's save ensuring Liverpool scraped through to the next round, where they'll face Bournemouth.
