Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom set to seal season-long Red Bull Salzburg loan move

Andre Wisdom is expected to complete a season-long loan switch to Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg in the coming days, with no place for him in Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool squad this season.

Liverpool outcast Andre Wisdom is set to seal a season-long loan to Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg, his fourth loan in as many years.

It was thought that the versatile defender was on the verge of a permanent transfer to Brendan Rodgers' Celtic, but Salzburg have beaten the Scottish side to Wisdom's signature.

The 23-year-old will travel to Austria to complete the deal, which will see him spend his fourth successive year away from Merseyside following loans of mixed success with Derby County, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.

Wisdom featured frequently throughout the Reds' recent pre-season, as well as making an appearance for the club's Under-23s in their 3-1 win at Arsenal last Friday, but has failed to convince Jürgen Klopp he was worthy of remaining to fight for a first-team place.

The defender, capable of playing at right-back or centre-back, doesn't appear to have a long-term future at Anfield but still has three years left on the long-term contract he signed just last summer.

He will therefore hope to convince Klopp he can still play a role for the club in the future, with plenty of game time on offer at Salzburg, who have Europa League football and take on SchalkeKrasnodar and Nice in the group stages.

The Red Bulls, managed by Oscar Garcia, have won the Austrian Bundesliga for the last three years straight and lost just four of their 36 league games last season.

Wisdom, a former England Under-21s captain, was once a highly-rated member of Liverpool's Academy and despite since graduating, has failed to live up to his promise thus far.

He scored on his debut under Brendan Rodgers in September 2012, a 5-3 win away at BSC Young Boys in the Europa League group stages, and went on to make 19 appearances in the Northern Irishman's first year at the club.

But he appeared just three times in the first-half of 2013-14 and was loaned out to Derby County, where he became a regular in the team that only missed out on promotion to the top-flight by a 90th-minute goal in the Championship play-off final.

Spells in the Premier League with West Brom and Norwich followed but Wisdom failed at both clubs to find the regular first-team football to aid his development and has now been granted another loan spell to try and kick on.

His departure means Liverpool now have 11 players out on loan deals, with the most high-profile seeing Jon Flanagan at fellow Premier League side Burnley and goalkeepers Danny Ward and Adam Bogdan at Huddersfield Town and Wigan Athletic respectively.
