Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Argentinian goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a three-year deal, bringing many rumours about a move for him to an end.
Joining on a free transfer upon the expiry of his deal at Sampdoria, Romero signs over a week after reports broke that he was set for a medical at Old Trafford.
Road to Manchester
Starting his career at Spanish side Racing, he then moved to Holland to join up with AZ Alkmaar, and it was in the Eredivisie that he linked up with Louis Van Gaal, who he will work with once again at United.
Van Gaal was at Alkmaar with the 'keeper between 2007-2009, before moving on to coaching Bayern Munich. Romero stayed for two more years, before Serie A side Sampdoria signed him.
After spending two years in Italy, he was loaned to AS Monaco where he struggled for gametime, before spending last season as second choice behind ex-Arsenal loanee Emiliano Viviano.
Another incoming
Romero becomes the fifth signing in a busy summer for United, joining Bastian Schweinstiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian at the club.
Their spending has topped £80million, as they look to close the gap on Premier League holders Chelsea, after a successful first season in Manchester for Van Gaal as he guided United back into the UEFA Champions League.
Argentinian teammates
A very well known player back in his own country, Romero has made 62 appearances for the Argentina national side since his debut in 2009, and has featured in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cup.
With Marcus Rojo and Angel di María at the club, he becomes the third Argentine in the Manchester United squad, with all three of them being fairly recent arrivals.
However, he may lose one of his compatriots soon, with Di Maria heavily linked with a move to Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain after a disappointing first season in Manchester, as he struggled with both form and injuries.
Who's Romero replacing?
There's certainly a debate to be had over who Romero is coming in for, after much speculation surrounding goalkeeping positions at United this summer.
Victor Valdes is set to leave the club just six months after joining on a free transfer himself, with Van Gaal saying earlier this week that the Spanish 'keeper had let himself down due to a bad attitude. Logically speaking, you could suggest that Romero is coming in for Valdes as a backup to David de Gea.
However, there has also been much rumoured over de Gea's future, with Spanish giants Real Madrid interested in securing his signature before the transfer window is over, as they look to replace legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Whether or not de Gea does leave the club or not remains to be seen, but a chance at the number one spot would certainly open up for Romero if he did depart, as United searched for a new starter between the sticks.
