Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal praised Timothy Fosu-Mensah for his speed that saved his side during their 1-0 win against Watford at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal pleased with Fosu-Mensah

The 18-year-old started his first game for the first team at centre-back due to Michael Carrick being rested. Fosu-Mensah picked up a yellow card in the 23rd minute, but showed the maturity to not get sent off and van Gaal was pleased with the defender during the game.

Van Gaal, on Fosu-Mensah's performance, said, "Timothy saved us three times I think because of his speed and I was very pleased on the pitch" as his partner Daley Blind had an off night and the youngster on several occasions had to stop Watford from scoring which he did well.

Van Gaal continued to say that he left young Dutch defender "on the pitch in the second half because he was the player who always closed the door for us" which showed his maturity beyond his years to come in on his start and stand out as one of the better players in the team.

Fosu-Mensah is another youngster that is benefitting from all of the injuries that van Gaal is having to deal with, but the youngster is a player who has been mentioned to come into the first team for a while. Van Gaal started the youngster at centre-back but feels that is not his best position.

On Fosu-Mensah's best position, van Gaal said "I think he is a better full-back than a central defender but he is from the origin at Ajax always playing right centre midfield or right centre-half" as it has been said that centre midfield is his best position to play and he could be used there in the coming years for United.

Van Gaal feels Fosu-Mensah showed maturity beyond his age

The good thing to see from the game against Watford was that Fosu-Mensah got an early yellow card but shows his maturity by making sure he didn't get sent off. Van Gaal praised him for this saying "when he gets a yellow card after 20 minutes then it is not easy to play against Ighalo or Deeney. He was very good".
