Van Gaal thanks Charlton for his support since he has been manager
United will rename the South Stand at Old Trafford the Sir Bobby Charlton stand before this weekend's game to pay tribute to the club legend. In his press conference van Gaal was high on praise for the legend and has thanked for his support since he has been the United manager.
van Gaal says that Sir Bobby "is always backing me, so I am very happy with him" as it's great when the manager is always under pressure and you get the backing of people who have a big say in the club. van Gaal also said, "on my first day as manager I was guided by him into the stadium" which meant a lot to the Dutchman.
Van Gaal reveals he grew up watching Sir Bobby
The Dutchman continued to say that Charlton "was also my idol when I was young" as for him Charlton was one the players that stood out in the world of Football. The Dutchman went on to reveal that he had two idols which he watched from FA Cup finals in England when he was younger in Jimmy Greaves and Charlton so for van Gaal he has known Charlton in his "mind for a lot of years".
The amount of pressure that has been on van Gaal over the past few months has been intense with a lot of people still shocked to see the Dutchman still in the job. van Gaal though is only focused on the support he is getting from the United board and has thanked Charlton for his support saying he is very deserving of his own stand.
Van Gaal says he is proud that the club are giving Sir Bobby his own stand
van Gaal said that Charlton is "such a kind friendly man" which was everything he had hoped he would be. The Dutchman continued to say that he is "very proud" that club is giving Charlton his own stand as "not many clubs are doing that".
van Gaal will be hoping that he can give Charlton, even more, to celebrate on Sunday by making sure that his side goes out on the pitch to get the win against Everton in what is a key game for the club in the race to try and finish in the Champions League places.
