Jose Mourinho made his third high-profile signing this summer in s Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian was in brilliant form for Borussia Dortmund last year, as he scored 26 goals, complementing 32 assists. He was vital as Dortmund pushed all the way for glory in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Europa League.
In a bid to bring back attacking football to Old Trafford, Jose looks to have signed the perfect player to complement the team in Mkhitaryan. The new United boss described him as a "very talented footballer" who has signed for the club having been in "such prolific form for both his club and his country".
Mkhitaryan a "talented footballer," says Mourinho
Mourinho was particularly appreciative of "his creativity, his vision and his concept of collective play". He also said that Mkhitaryan has a good "change of speed with the ball and without the ball, and that is very, very important for a club like ours."
The Portuguese has emphasised his agenda to sign 'specialists' for United and Mkhitaryan certainly belongs to that category. Other than his contribution at the higher end of the pitch, Henrikh is also an engine player in the midfield and will work tirelessly to win the ball back and start counter-attacks. His efforts have resulted in positive performances for the entire team, more so for the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus who made full use of his work at Dortmund. The trio were the leaders of Dortmund's challenge for titles last season. Now, at 27, Mkhitaryan will be hoping that he can deliver stellar performances for United.
Mkhitaryan shone at Shakhtar and Dortmund
He began his career in European football with his youth club Pyunik and had a short spell at Metalurh Donetsk in Ukraine, but he really put himself on the map with Shakhtar Donetsk. He was the artist among the Brazilians already at the club, the likes of Luiz Adriano, Willian, Alex Texeira, Bernard and the experienced Darijo Srna, as Shakhtar were praised for their attacking brand of football. Mkhitaryan scored plenty of goals and made plenty for his teammates as well, Shakhtar winning the treble in his first season and the double in the following season.
He caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp and the German, now in charge at Liverpool, signed him up for Dortmund. Klopp did not reveal Mkhitaryan's true potential under the way he played him for the team and it was only when Thomas Tuchel took over that the Armenian showed the Bundesliga his true talent as he took it by a storm, being voted the Players' player of the season. Now, Jose Mourinho believes that Mkhitaryan can make a similar impact for United and that he has all that's needed to make it in the Premier League.
