New Middlesbrough winger Adama Traoré has spoken to the club's fans for the first time since sealing his switch from Aston Villa on transfer deadline day.

Traoré, 20, joins after an injury-hit first season in English football with Villa. He made just nine appearances for the relegated side due to a serious injury and some differences with the coaching staff.

Now, though, Traoré says he is looking forward to settling into his new surroundings under manager Aitor Karanka, who says the Spanish-born Malian is a player he knows well.

'I like to attack defenders, to excite the fans'

"I am very happy to come here," Traoré told the club's official website. "It is important for me to develop my football, but I am here to work for the team".

Traoré made his Barcelona league and Champions League debuts before the age of 18, and says that he is a player who "likes to attack, to excite".

"I like to attack defenders and score goals," he went on. "If not then I pass to someone who can and we win the game. This is my job".

Spanish presence will help Adama settle

After apparently struggling to settle in after joining Aston Villa as a teenager, Traoré is optimistic that the number of Spaniards and Spanish speakers at Middlesbrough will help him to bed in more easily.

"It is good there are many Spanish speakers here," he admitted. "But I must speak English and learn the language better. This will help everybody".

His new boss Karanka has coached Spanish youngsters before having coached Spain U16s and Real Madrid, while Traoré will have Spanish speakers such as Álvaro NegredoGastón Ramírez and Antonio Barragán around him on the pitch.
