Southampton made it three wins in a row in the Premier League as a solid performance from the Saints brought them a fabulous win at Old Trafford, with Manchester United once again suffering the boos of their supporters.

Tight from first whistle to last

Many expected this to be a close game and so it proved as neither team could find many clear-cut chances in a game where both keepers were largely untested throughout.

Once more United controlled the possession but really didn't take advantage as between the two sides there were only three shots on target in the whole game, with Southampton scoring from their first.

Southampton once more lined up in a 5-3-2 formation with Jordy Clasie and Dusan Tadic coming in for James Ward-Prowse and the injured Steven Davis, which is something that the home side matched after just 20 minutes when they reverted to five-at-the-back as well.

Neither side's midfield bossed the game and it was a tight battle between former Saint Morgan Schniederlin and Victor Wanyama in the centre of the park.

Saints remain solid at the back

There was continuity in the Saints back line once again as it was the same back five and keeper which have played in the past two league wins and clean sheets.

The emergence of Matty Targett has come as a huge boost for the Saints as he improves in every game he plays in and is continuing to follow those who were before him in his position.

Ryan Bertrand has also been superb in his new position as a left-sided centre-half and he put in another fine performance for the Saints. They were well led by their leader and captain Jose Fonte who, alongside Virgil Van Dijk, was superb throughout and didn't give the hosts a sniff.

Southampton have also been boosted by the return of keeper Fraser Forster from injury as they have kept three clean sheets since his return, winning all three games to send the Saints up to eighth in the Premier League table.

Charlie Austin makes immediate impact

He was on the pitch for just seven minutes before firing a header from a perfect Ward-Prowse free kick which came after United sub Adan Januzaj committed a silly foul right by the corner flag and handed Saints the lead with just three minutes to go.

Austin scored with only his fourth touch as a Southampton player to hand his new side a fabulous win against a largely disappointing United side who don't seem to know where to go from this.

To make such a early impact is even more impressive as he had only been training with his new teammates for the last couple of days, prior to finding the corner of the net after replacing Sadio Mane late on.

Two wins from two at Old Trafford

After not winning away to Manchester United for 27 years, Southampton have now beaten Louis van Gaal's side twice in the space of twelve months.

It was a fantastic showing from everyone involved and was a real team effort from back to front to help transform Southampton's season round after enduring a tough December.

Despite the lack of quality in the game, if either side was to win the game it was the visitors who had looked more worthy of the three points throughout for a second consecutive Old Trafford win.

Tough games keep coming for Saints

The late winner will also have left Ronald Koeman's men full of confidence as they head into a ten-day break from action as focus next week turns to the FA Cup, a competition which Southampton were knocked out of earlier in the month by Crystal Palace.

After the break comes a tricky spell of fixtures with games against Chelsea and Burnley preceded by a trip to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Tuesday 2 February.
