Southampton defenders Jose Fonte and Cedric Soares have both been named in the latest Portugal squad, which was announced last night. A squad of twenty four players will play in the two friendlies at the end of the month, against Bulgaria and Belgium.
The call comes for Fonte after another impressive season which has seen him miss just one Premier League match the win over Stoke City last weekend due to suspension. He has played a key role in his side once more being competitive in the division as they look to reach the Europa League places one again. Fonte has really benefited from taking the captains arm band a couple of years ago and this has no doubt helped his chances of getting into the senior squad.
As for Cedric, he has also been a really key performer for the Saints so far this season. His contributions at right-back have helped his side to keep a number of clean sheets so far this season, with him really having developed into a great player following his moving from Sporting Lisbon in the summer.
Portugal first host Bulgaria at Estádio Municipal de Leiria on Friday 25th March with a 7.45pm GMT kick-off time. They then head onto Belgium for another friendly on Tuesday 29th March for another 7.45pm BST start. These two matches are vital for Portugal as it is the final matches which they will face before the end of the regular season ahead of this summer’s Euro's in France.
Both players have eight caps to date and will be looking to get some more international minutes under their belt to stake a claim for a place in the starting eleven. Following these two fixtures the pair will head back to Southampton before joining their team mates in making the trip to Leicester on Sunday the 3rd April at the King Power Stadium.
