Southampton duo Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand both featured as England overcame Australia 2-1 at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in the penultimate European Championship warm up game.
The two Saints stars were given the chance to impress boss Roy Hodgson, and hope to book their seat on the plane to France, as he prepares to pick and name his final squad earlier next week.
With games against Slovakia, 2018 World Cup hosts Russia and bitter neighbours Wales ahead of them, boss Hodgson as to pick wisley who boards the flight and who will be watching from home.
Duty of a Saint
Forster and Bertrand were defensively excellent all night and looked to help contribute towards the Three Lions keeping a clean sheet, but 15 minutes from time Eric Dier turned the ball through Forster’s legs and into his own goal to give the Southern Hemisphere side hope.
Burnley’s Tom Heaton came on for his first International Cap and replaced Forster with a couple minutes remaining but left back Bertrand completed the full 90 minutes.
The next generation
England, who rested many of the certainties’ for the final 23-man squad, gave off some encouraging vibes around Wearside, as Manchester United starlet Marcus Rashford netted three minutes into his International debut.
Rashford ended up picking up man-of-the-match award for the home side who secured the win after Wayne Rooney came off the bench to smash one home.
The United striker has now through a spanner in the works after he was considered to be one of the three that would not make the final cut, but however his fantastic display over the Socceroos has left a dilemma that i wouldnt not want to be the solver of.
England now host Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal side on Thursday at Wembley before jetting off to set up camp in Chantilly (Northern France), for the Euro 2016 campaign.
