Sunderland LadiesRachael Laws has been called up by England for games against Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina later this month.

The shot stopper was involved in a friendly tournament in China for the Lionesses last month, with manager Mark Sampson selecting a much changed squad to that which travelled to the Women's World Cup in the summer due to Arsenal and Notts County competing in the WSL Cup final near the time.

However, Laws clearly impressed the manager enough during that short tournament, which consisted of just two games for England, as now she has been called back up to face Germany in a friendly next Thursday and Bosnia in a Euro 2017 qualifier the Sunday after.

Laws pleased to earn another call-up

Speaking to Sunderland Ladies' official FAWSL site about her inclusion in the squad, Laws revealed that "obviously" she is "delighted to be involved again" with her country.

She described the tournament in China as "an amazing experience" and now she "can't wait" to be back with her national team and "for the next journey to begin".

Manchester City's Karen Bardsley is expected to be Sampson's first choice stopper once more, but should Laws see any action, it would be her first cap for her country.

Sampson reshuffles goalkeeping trio

Under Sampson's charge, the three goalkeepers called up have largely remained the same for each of his squads.

Bardsley has long been the number one choice, whilst Siobhan Chamberlain acted as a back-up and Carly Telford, voted into the WSL 1 PFA Team of the Year 2015, was dubiously third choice.

However, Laws' inclusion sees Chamberlain fall out-of-favour with her having done so at club level too - and this is likely to have played a part.

The Arsenal 'keeper was essentially third choice by the end of this season, falling behind the experienced Emma Byrne and Dutch international Sari van Veenendaal, which led to her going out on loan to Notts County to deputise for the injured Telford after the World Cup.

Still, once Telford returned to fitness, she was back on the bench.

Having seen this affect her position in the England team, one would not be surprised to see her search for a new club during the off-season.

For Laws though, the news is fantastic, especially since she beat Mary Earps to the spot, the Bristol Academy 'keeper having turned many heads this season and her performances earning her a spot in the squad that travelled to China in October - despite her club's relegation to WSL 2.
