With the Premier League season now firmly behind the footballing world is gearing up for this Summer's big spectacle, the European Championships.

But one man who won't be getting on a plane to France is Sunderland's Adam Matthews who was cut from the Wales squad this week, failing to make the final 23

Cut from the squad

Matthews suffered the same fate as many players this week who were all given the heartbreaking news that they weren't a part of their team's final plans, with Paul Dummett also missing out on a place in the team.

Chris Coleman opted for only seven defenders on the trip to the Euros and therefore both men were not needed alongside midfielder Emyr Huws who also missed out on a space in the team. It's a tough decision to hear for any player with everyone hoping they have worked hard enough to make it but ultimately there are only 23 places available for each team.

Matthews spent the second half of the season away from the Black Cats on loan at Bristol City and impressed Coleman, earning himself a call-up into his preliminary squad.

Matthews will now be forced to sit back and watch the Euros as a spectator though as he prepares for a new season, for which his future is certain. Whether he will be involved in Sam Allardyce's plans as he aims to take Sunderland away from constant relegation battles remains unclear, with there rumours of a permanent switch to Bristol.

Wales will join England, Russia, and Slovakia in Group B of this year's Euros and they will be aiming to at least qualify from the group, hoping to cause an upset along the way.

The game with England will be one of the biggest in the nation's history and that will make missing out even tougher for Matthews.
