After being in the transfer window spotlight for various reasons regarding the in-and-out speculation surrounding the club, Watford announced this morning that Heurelho Gomes has extended his stay at the Hornets by signing a new contract.
The Brazilian goalkeeper put pen to paper, dedicating his future to Watford with a deal running until 2018. After picking up Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season at the club’s annual end of season award ceremony, it was expected that the 35-year-old would be rewarded with a new contract alongside his honours from last year.
Gomes moved to Watford back in 2014 from Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer, following a successful loan spell at Bundesliga club, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, in 2013. In truth, the 'keeper's career was sparked to life by PSV Eindhoven. He played for the Dutch club for four years before making the move to the Premier League for £8m.
The number one man for Watford
Gomes played an integral part in Watford’s promotion to the Premier League in his first season at the club, securing 15 clean sheets in 44 appearances in the Championship. Watford had a phenomenal year under the guidance of Quique Sanchez Flores, finishing 13th in their first season in the top tier of English football since their promotion. Gomes earned eleven clean sheets, just five short of Golden Glove winner, Petr Cech.
Adding to his haul of awards to conclude a fantastic season for Watford, Gomes also won performance of the season as a result of his heroics at West Brom, in which he saved two Saido Berahino penalties; eventually winning his team three points in a 1-0 win.
The services of the Brazilian have evidently been gratefully received by his club, following his new contract after the January signing of former Manchester City 'keeper, Costel Pantilimon. There has been great competition between the posts at Watford since the introduction of Pantilimon, however the club’s trust in Gomes has been secured with a new deal, terminating any rumours of the Brazilian heading towards the exit.
