Birmingham City Ladies midfielder Jo Potter expressed her satisfaction with the result the Blues obtained at Arsenal Ladies last weekend.
Birmingham's resilience earns Blues point
The visitors’ impeccable performance at Meadow Park earned the West Midlands outfit a valuable point in their bid to climb the Women’s Super League One table. David Parker’s back five restricted their opposition to just two shots on target throughout the afternoon but also troubled Arsenal’s defenders, with Remi Allen notably striking the crossbar in the first-half.
The goalless draw came following a 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers Belles and sees Birmingham with the best defensive record outside of the top two. Despite deploying a defensive set-up against the Gunners, Jo Potter, who spoke to VAVEL after the full-time whistle, insisted that the Blues went to Hertfordshire in search of a win.
“We came here looking for the three points,” proclaimed the England international. “We've played them before this season in the FA Cup and we thought we were unlucky in that, especially going out on penalties and going ahead in that game – we knew we would always create chances.
"We had a couple of one-on-ones with the ‘keeper, our forwards got into really good positions and it's just about taking the chances and making the goalkeeper make a save. It's just about whether you take them [the chances] and today, unfortunately, we couldn't.
“It's a good day when you can't score that you keep a clean sheet and you manage to come away with a point.”
Jo Potter delighted after "tough" week
Danielle Carter and Dominique Janssen came closest to opening the scoring for Arsenal, with the latter guiding a free-kick onto the woodwork in injury time. The Gunners find themselves eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City Women after just five matches but Potter, who is enjoying her third stint with the club, was delighted with what Birmingham took from the game and a challenging week.
“It's a good point for us really,” said the 31-year-old. “We consider Arsenal as title chasers and they always have a good team, so it's really pleasing that I thought we held our own against them.
“We’ve had three tough games in one week, and getting four points from it is a pretty good week.”
