UEFA Euro 2017 Qualifying - Group 5 round-up: All decided but second place

Germany will qualify and Russia will finish in second position if they secure at least a point in their last two games, even if Hungary win their final fixture.

After the international break, Russia have managed to move themselves into second place in Euro 2017 qualifying's Group 5, three points ahead of third place Hungary with a game in hand.

This means the pressure is on for Hungary to ensure a win in their last fixture to give themselves a chance of qualifying. Croatia sit just one point behind them in fourth place but will be unable to qualify since they are four points from second place with just one game left.

The fate of Turkey has also been decided despite them claiming three points on Monday, whilst Germany sat comfortably in the top-spot, automatically qualifying before the break began, and did not play a fixture this time around.

Russia in good stead for second

Despite the possibility of finishing top of their group and automatically qualifying being off the cards, Russia made sure they gave themselves a good chance of finishing second.

They started with a 2-0 victory over Turkey, with goals from Ekaterina Pantyukhina and Nadezhda Karpova. This was then followed up with a second win over Croatia, which ended 3-0. Russia went ahead after an own-goal from Sandra Zigic, which was followed by goals from Karpova and Anna Kozhnikova all before the break.

Too little too late for Turkey

Elsewhere, Turkey secured a 2-1 victory over Hungary this week, with a goal from Ece Turkoglu and an own-goal from Evelin Mosdoczi. Hungary managed to get one back before the end of the first half with a goal from VfL Wolfsburg's Zsanett Jakabfi, but a goal-less second half meant that the three points went to the home side.

It was the first win of the qualifiers for Turkey, who now sit on just four points having played all of their games. So, despite a good result from the side in their final fixture, it won’t be nearly enough to get them through to the later stages.
