Arsenal Ladies have confirmed this week that Netherlands international Danielle van de Donk has extended her stay with the club by signing a new contract.

Impressive first season

The 25-year-old, who can play as both a midfielder and striker, has impressed in her first season with the Gunners. Van de Donk has fitted in well with Pedro Martinez Losa's side scoring six goals in 17 appearances in her maiden campaign, including a late winner against Chelsea in WSL 1.

Netherlands international van de Donk arrived from Swedish side Goteburg FC in November 2015 and was paramount in the lead-up to Arsenal becoming 2016 FA Women's Cup champions. The midfielder scored a hat-trick in the semi-final against Sunderland to seal Arsenal's place in the Wembley final.

Career highlights

Van de Donk started her career at Willem II and VVV-Venlo, she spent several seasons at the Eredivise clubs before making the move to PSV/FC Eindhoven in the BeNE League. After three successful seasons with the club - scoring 30 goals in 50 appearances - van de Donk transfered to Swedish Damallsvenken side Kopparbergs/ Goteborg FC in June 2015.

A seasoned international with the Netherlands national team, van de Donk made her international debut in 2010 and featured in the 2015 Women's World Cup for her country, the first time Holland have ever qualified for the tournament.

Most recently the Arsenal midfielder featured in the Netherlands' defeat to the USWNT at the Georgia Dome in September. 

A statement on the Official Arsenal website regarding the contract extension reads: " We would like to congratulate Danielle on her new deal and look forward to her continued progress with the club".

The news comes after the Gunners completed a comprehensive 5-0 victory over bottom of the table Doncaster Rovers Belles last night, keeping their slim chances of Champions League qualification alive.
