Rennes will play host to Angers in a highly anticipated Coupe de France semi-final tie.

Rennes have made it to five Coupe de France finals in its 113 year history and many semi finals. However Rennes' last cup win was 43 years ago when Andre Guy's penalty smacked the net, defeating Lyon by the single goal to nil.

Since then Rennes have made it to only one 'Coupe' final, in 2009 when 'Les Rouges et Noirs' came up against fellow Bretons Guingamp and were defeated 2-1 in the Stade de France.

Only one player remains from the squad that day and that is club captain and right-back Romain Danze who will be leading the line tomorrow at the Route de Lorient. Being the sole survivor from the starting squad, Romain knows how to progress past the semi-finals wearing the red and black colours of Rennes and will be looking to do that again.

Angers haven't got as rich a history as Rennes have. In their 95 years of existence the only notable achievement in the honours of 'les scoïstes' are two Ligue 2 titles and one cup final, in 1957. The two league titles gained them promotion to the top division.

Currently, Angers play in the second tier of French football and finished 5th place last season but they seemed to have found great form in this seasons cup competition, eliminating Chambly, Ligue 1 side Sochaux, CA Bastia and Moulins to reach the semi-final against Rennes.

Rennes themselves have not played as well as hoped in the league this season, currently placing 14th in the table and within touching distance of a relegation place from Ligue 1. With new manager, Philippe Montanier in charge there was always going to be time to steady the ship. Nonetheless Rennes, like Angers have performed well in the cup progressing past Valenciennes, Boulogne, Auxerre and Lille, arguably a harder route to the semi-finals than their opponents.

Rennes have come off the back of a narrow 0-1 home defeat to second place Monaco in league duty. Monaco are in the other semi-final which will be contested against themseleves and Guingamp.

Angers however, did win their match at the weekend at home to Le Havre and will look to the match against Rennes to start a good run of form.

Nobody is going to argue that the Bretons are heavy favourites to win the match tomorrow as it would be unthinkable to believe that players such as Ola Toivonen and Jean Makoun will not be more than experienced enough with Romain Danze to lead Rennes into another cup final.

There is always a chance that those in the Angers squad will want to make history and become the first players to lead them to a cup final since the late 50s and that is the beauty of cup football, in any country, that the underdog can always produce a surprise.

This will be a test of a team trying to make history against a team with a new manager trying to re-establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in the cup.
