23.57. Heartbreak for the Greeks as Costa Rica take five perfect penalties and Gekas is the fall guy  for Greece after his fourth penalty was smartly saved by Navas.

Goal! Costa Rica 5-3 Greece. Costa Rica progress!

Saveddd!!!!!! Costa Rica 4-3 Greece. Gekas is the man that misses!!

Goal! Costa Rica 4-3 Greece. Joel Campbell

Goal! Costa Rica 3-3 Greece. Holebas

Goal! Costa Rica 3-2 Greece. Gonzalez

Goal! Costa Rica 2-2 Greece. Christodoulopoulos

Goal! Costa Rica 2-1 Greece. No mistake from Brian Ruiz

Goall!!!!! Costa Rica 1-1 Greece. Mitroglu scores with a short run up.

Goal!! Costa Rica 1-0 Greece. Confident and superb penalty from Borges

Here we go! Costa Rica and Borges are set to take the first penalty

23.44. Little bit of drama here as Greece coach Fernando Santos looks to have been sent to the stands by the referee after trying to pass on some instructions.

Full Time: Costa Rica 1-1 Greece. We have penalties!

120' Chance!!!!!! Lovely dinked ball to Mitroglu who is onside, the ball comes down right into his path and when he looked certain to score, Navas somehow saves it through a combination of hand and boot.

118' Wasted opportunity for Greece. Campbell loses possession for Costa Rica, Manolas brings the ball forward and plays it to Mitroglu but he skies over.

116' Samaras stands the ball up well into the Costa Rica area but it is just about caught by Navas. If only that would have been a foot higher it would have been the perfect ball.

113' Superb breakaway by the Greeks as Mitroglu carries the ball a long way and feeds Christodoulopoulos who strikes it well but his effort his too staright and saved by Navas. Possibly the bst chance of extra time for Costa Rica.

112' Cubero galloping forward for Costa Rica looking for Campbell who misses it and Manolas clears it high above his goal and out for a corner.

108' Piercing pass from Katsouranis looking for Gekas but Navas is off his line quickly to brilliantly gather the pass ahead of the veteran forward.

106' The second period of extra time is underway

ET Half Time: Costa Rica 1-1 Greece

104 Costa Rica with a rare venture forward in this period of extra time but its  superb interception from Katsouranis to sniff out Brenes' pullback.

100' Kastouranis sees his shot from close distance blocked by the Costa Rica defender following a bit of pin-ball in the Costa Rica penalty area

96' Christodoulopoulos gets past Diaz with ease but his ball is awful and Costa Rica easily clear.

94' Greec are starting to get some real quality balls into the box now and Mitroglu has just spurned his second oppurtunity.

91' Extra Time is underway. Both sides have made all three changes and this 30 minutes of football will certainly be punishing on the players' legs

Full Time: Costa Rica 1-1 Greece. Extra time beckons in Recife following that dramatic Greek equaliser

90+3'. Brilliant save from Navas! It comes of Mitroglu's shoulder and Navas does superbly to tip over. Mitroglu surely thought he scored then!

90' Frantic play inside the edge of the penalty area, Navas makes a decent save but he only manages to parry it out to Sokratis Papastathopoulos who scores his first Greece goal in the most dramatic of circumstances.

90' Goallllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Costa Rica 1-1 Greece

89' Yellow Card: Navas (Costa Rica). The Costa Rican goalkeeper is booked for timewasting

87' Lovely ball out wide to Christodoulopoulos, he betas Diaz with ease and his ball hits Navas who gets fortunate with the ricochet which falls just out of the way of Kostas Mitroglu.

83' Costa Rica sub: Bolanos (on) Brenes (on)

82' It's another costless kick put into the Costa Rican penalty arae by Greece but this time it is Manolas that heads over.

77' Maniatis (off) Katsouranis (on)

76' Costa Rica sub: Gamboa (off) Acosta (on). Gamboa is certainly not rushing off the field here and he is being helped off by Samaras as Costa Rica attempt to stifle Greece's attacking threat from the left.

72' Yellow Card: Manolas (Greece). The cards and fouls are now flowing in this game as Costa Rica try and see out this last 20 minutes or so.

68' Greece sub: Salpingidis (off) Gekas (on)

66' Potential game changer as Duarte is sent off! He can't have any complaints there as he slides in late in the tackle having already been booked. Lifeline for Greece!

66' Red Card: Duarte (Costa Rica)

65' Costa Rica sub: Tejeda (off) Cubero (on)

57' Greece sub: A.Samaris (off) Mitroglu (on)

56' Bizarre moment there as the Costa Rica substitute goalkeeper Granados is booked by the referee on who runs over to the bench. The reason for the booking is unclear at this stage.

52' Lovely pass from Bolanos to Brian Ruiz on the edge of the penalty area and the Fulham puts the ball right into the bottom right hand corner beyond Karnezis. Not the cleanest of strikes but they all count.  Greece will need to be more expansive now!

52' Goallllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Costa Rica 1-0 Greece

48' Yellow Card: Tejeda (Costa Rica).

47' Samaras manages to get his head on the ball from a Greece costless kick but he can't get his placement right and it is straight at Navas.

46' We're underway in the 2nd half! Let's hope for an improvement!

21.55. Lets hope that the second half is better as the game starts to open up a little bit.

21.51. . Certainly not the best half of football during this World Cup so far. Salpingidis forced Navas into a decent save during the first half but otherwise there have been few chances of note in what has been a tight and cagey first half.

Half Time: Costa Rica 0-0 Greece

43' Karagounis floats a costless kick into the area  but Navas rises above everybody else to catch with ease. I personally thought that Karagounis might of shot from that range.

37' Chance! Just as I say that we have a real opportunity! Superb ball from Holebas out wide, Salpingidis gets there ahead of Diaz and his first time effort has superbly saved by Navas. The moment of quality we need?

36' The build up play during this game has been incredibly slow. and it is certainly not the greatest of spectacles for the viewer. We are desparately crying out for a goal or moment of quality.

28' Karagounis gets a generous bounce of the ball and he finds himself with space to shoot but it's an easy shot to gather for Navas in the Costa Rica goal.

22' Bolanos puts in a very good ball from the costlesskick but it just about misses the head of everybody in the penalty area and the Greeks manage to get it clear.

21' Joel Campbell with a sharp change of pace it go past Maniatis and he is bundled over by Karagounis for a Costa Rica costlesskick right on the edge of the penalty area on the right hand side.

15' Papastathopoulos cuts acroos his man and finds some space but he puts his header well wide following the first corner of the match.

12' Christodoulopoulos cuts in from the right hand side and puts a shot wide of Navas' goal.

10' Fantastic, rout one ball to Samaras who controls the ball well but the offside flag is correctly raised for offside.

7' Some promising play there from Costa Rica. Samaris is quickly dispossessed  the ball is played to Bolanos from Campbell but Bolanos hits his effort just over from what was quite a difficult angle.

2' Early costless kick for the Greeks, the ball in was a poor one but it makes its way out to Christodoulopoulos who skies his long range effort over the bar

1' We're underway in Recife. A quarter final tie against the Netherlands awaits the winners.

20.54. It's now time for the national anthems of Greece and Costa Rica.

20.50. The two teams are n the tunnel. We're almost ready to go here in Recife!

20.41. Joel Campbell has obviously been a key player for Costa Rica this world cup but the Arsenal man spent last season on loan at Greek champions Olympiakos. A sizeable portion of this Greek squad play thieir club football with Olympiakos so Campbell will be able to offer his team so invaluable tips on many members of this Greek squad.

20.30. Umana has said: " To have qualified top of the group makes us proud. It gives us graet satisfaction as a group. We have grown as a team although  we have always been characterized by strong and silent work.

20.28. Tejeda's teamate, defender Michael Umana, has also spoken ahead of tonight's game, stating his pride in his team and country.

20.22. Tejeda said: "We were thinking more about the Ivory Coast and Colombia if I am being honest. Now we have to change the video cassette."

20.20. With both sides not expecting to face each other, last minute homework has been part of the preparations for both teams this week. Something which Costa Rica midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda can testify.

20.10. Speaking ahead of tonight's game Greece coach Fernando Santos said: " We showed against Ivory Coast how well we can defend but also how ell we can attack. We created a lot of chances and we kept attacking until the end. Even when we conceded the equaliser,  we continued to attack."

20.04. Tonight;s match is the first time that Greece have ever met Costa Rica in an international fixture.

19.58. It was Giorgios Samaras' late penalty which took Greece into the knockout stages against Ivory Coast on Tuesday. With many people tipping this one to go all the way, expect Samaras' nerves of steel to be a vital asset  to the Greeks.

19.46. If you're having a flutter on tonight's match, it may not be wise to expect too many goals. We all know about Greece's rigid and solid defensive structure but Costa Rica have not conceded a goal during open play in this tournament. Expect them to be a tough nut to crack this evening.

19.35. Incidentally, that 1-0 victory against Italy came at the Arena Pernambuco, Recife. Bernambuco is tonight's venue for this round of 16 clash, so it certainly holds fond memories for Costa Rica.

19.30. Karagounis will come up against his Fulham team mate Brian Ruiz this evening. Ruiz had a very disappointing season at Craven Cottage last year but he's been right at his best during this World Cup for Costa Rica, scoring the winner in the 1-0 victory over Italy.

19.25. Should Greece go out tonight it will also be the final international match of Georgios Karagounis' career. Karagounis will acheive his 139th cap tonight making him Greece's most capped player by some distance. It will surely be a sad occasion in Greece tonight should the legend make his final apperance.

19.20. One interesting story in the build up to this match is that Greece coach Fernando Santos' current contract runs out tomorrow. Santos has stated that he has no intention to renew his current contract so Greece and Santos could be left in a potentially awkward situation if Greece win tonight.

19.10 Costa Rica of course managed to reach the last 16 during Italia 90 were they were thrashed 4-1 by Czechoslovakia. La Sele will certainly be hoping for a better result this evening against a Greek side that has never previously reached this stage of the competition.

19.04. It''s certainly a surprise to see these two nations playing each other tonight. Both were heavily unfancied to make it through their group but both have played some decent football and both have been rewarded with what they would see as a kind draw in a bid to make the quarter finals

19.00. Hello everybody. The Round of 16 is now in full swing and I'm James Richmond here to take you through tonight's tie between Costa Rica and Greece.
