There are fears for Martin Stranzl tonight after he suffered a bruise to the skull when he got a Vladimir Darida shot in the face from close range.

This injury occurred during Gladbach’s 1-0 home win against Freiburg. The former Austrian international sustained the blow to the head just one minute into the second half.

The first diagnosis late this evening is skull contusion. There will be further checks on Wednesday, where Stranzl will be checked neurologically.

This season, Stranzl has missed five games for Gladbach through illness and injury.

It’ll be race against time to announce his fitness before Friday’s game away to Schalke at the Veltins Arena. Where it'll be fourth - third in a bid to secure European football next season.

“I don’t think he’ll be fit enough for Friday," said Borussia's Director Max Eberl.

The 34-year old has been at Gladbach since 2011 and since then he has made 106 appearances for the Foals scoring eight times.

He played for Austria for nine years making over fifty appearances.
