2. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig and head coach Alex Zorniger have gone their separate ways by mutual consent, the club announced on Wednesday morning.

Zorniger joined the side from Saxony back in 2012, leading the side to back-to-back promotions from the Regionalliga Nordost and 3. Liga.

Despite winning 62 of his 101 games since taking over and currently sitting in seventh place, just five points from the promotion places, a 2-0 defeat to Erzgebirge Aue proved to be the final match of his tenure.

"Alex has done exceptional work here and was extremely successful with the side during his two and a half years here," said sporting director Ralf Rangnick. "He played a major part in us currently playing in 2. Bundesliga."

Youth coach Achim Beierlorzer has been handed control of first-team duties on an interim basis, with former Mainz boss Thomas Tuchel rumoured to be one of the favourties for the vacant post.

Beierlorzer, should a replacement not be found in time for the weekend, will take charge of the team against FSV Frankfurt on Sunday.
