At the Stadio Olimpico di Torino, Maxi Lopez's first half brace was canceled out by a late goal from Gurpegi as Athletic Bilbao now take a slight advantage into the second leg.

In a very entertaining first half of football, Maxi Lopez scored a brace to give Torino a 2-1 lead after Iñaki Williams gave the Spanish club the initial lead. Athletic Club started out pressuring the home side's back three, and it worked. The center backs often found themselves making an errant passes time after time. Their reward came in just nine minutes as Borja Viguera sent in a wonderful cross into the box which Williams was able to convert easily. Williams had another goal five minutes later, but this time his effort was poor as he blasted the ball well over the top of the goal as he found some space inside the 18-yard-box.

After the 15 minute mark, things seemed to have settled down after a frantic start, with Torino gaining control of the match. They were able to play the ball out wide and whip crosses from both flanks and that's how they got their first goal of the match. Cristian Molinari received the ball from a back heel and hit a cross with his left foot. Maxi Lopez slid in front of an Athletic center defender to level this match in the 18th minute.

Right before the hosts second goal of the match, Josef Martinez had the chance to take the lead, but he badly mishit the ball from the edge of the six yard box. Thankfully for Martinez, Lopez would snatch at his chance as Darmian hit another good cross which found the head of the striker as he rose above the opposing defenders

The second half started out much like the first as Athletic put pressure on Torino in their own attacking third. But this time, they knew what was coming and made quick passes to avoid the press. Shortly before the hour mark Molinari and El Kaddouri bot had shots from close range, but they fell straigt into the hands of Herrerín, as he put on a fine performance despite giving up the two goals.

Shortly coming onto the pitch, Fabio Quagliarela missed a chance badly from inside the box after he found a bit of space. There were quite a few half chances in between Quagliarela's shot and the final goal, but nothing that really gave either goal keeper much fuss. Valverdi got his changes right this match, however, as Gurpegi found a little bit of space and flicked the ball home from Beñat after he delivered a ball in following a free kick from about thirty yards away. With nine minutes to go, the same two footballers nearly connected for a second time, but this time, it was from the opposite flank as Gurpegi hits the ball with his head onto the crossbar.
