Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Sporting Director Max Eberl has put an end to speculation that die Fohlen will cash in on midfielder Granit Xhaka in the summer.

Although the Swiss international has only recently signed a new contract with Mönchengladbach, with that deal running until 2019, many clubs are said to be interested in Xhaka, including last year’s Champions of Spain, Atletico Madrid.

I’m one-hundred percent that he wouldn’t have signed a new contract a few weeks ago, only to then move on to another club for €25m in the summer,” stated Eberl to the media on Monday.

The news will come as a relief to fans of die Fohlen, as Xhaka has developed into a key player for the league’s third-placed club over the course of the last season. Over the course of 36 matches in all competitions, the 22 year-old has directly played a part in 10 goals, and has also become the central point of Borussia’s midfield strategy, acting as a deep-lying playmaker to devastating effect.

His new contract is thought to have a buy-out clause active from 2017, however for the time being, Xhaka will continue to help Mönchengladbach in their fight for European football in the coming seasons.
