St. Pauli have started the season in fine form and have surprised a few as they've picked up seven points. On Sunday they travelled to Leipzig to face RB Leipzig, who have started well and sit one place above their guests due to goal difference.
Only time will tell if St. Pauli can keep this form going throughout the season and after today's victory they may take some stopping.
Leipzig came agonisingly close to taking the lead after twenty minutes, the ball was slipped through to Emil Forsberg and the Swedish attacker cut onto his left which saw Lasse Sobiech and Philipp Ziereis slide past him, his outside of the foot effort couldn't curl enough and struck the post.
Fabio Coltorti made a brilliant save to deny Enis Alushi and it was enough to slow the ball in order for the danger to be cleared. Marc Rzatkowski's cross into the middle just before the forty minute mark caused problems, Coltori could only punch the ball as far as Ziereis and the defender's effort was well blocked by Georg Teigl.
St. Pauli take the lead
St. Pauli finished the half very strongly and they grabbed the lead just before the break. Rzatkowski flicked the ball over a defender and Lennart Thy volleyed a great effort from outside the area into the bottom corner.
Davie Selke should've scored five minutes into the second half, the ball was played over the top and Yussuf Poulsen used his strength well before laying the ball on a plate for Selke, the former Bremen man could only fire wide.
St. Pauli looked good on the counter attack and one example of that was just before the hour mark. Alushi played the ball down the right wing for Waldemar Sobota who bombed forward, unfortunately for the right back the angle didn't favour him and despite beating Coltori, he could only hit the side netting.
Leipzig continued to have the most of the ball and kept pushing for an equaliser, however it looked more and more likely it wasn't going to be their day. One opportunity saw Poulsen keep the ball in play and to find Forsberg, the Swede managed to play the ball across from the byline, sadly for him no team mate was in sight and St. Pauli cleared.
Himmelmann puts in an heroic performance
The home side continued to struggle breaking down the St. Pauli defence and one of their closest chances came from a freekick, Dominik Kaiser managed to get his freekick over the wall, however it flew just over the bar.
Kaiser once again caused problems with his set pieces and a wide freekick in the last five minutes curled towards the top corner and Robin Himmelmann had to be at his best to flick the effort over.
From a throw in St. Pauli should've doubled their lead and confirmed the win. Alushi came inside to play a one-two with Kyoung-Rok Choi and despite having space and the goal in clear view he somehow got his effort horribly wrong and sliced the ball wide.
Moments after the St. Pauli chance Zsolt Kalmár tried his luck from range for the hosts and once again Himmelmann showed his worth by pulling off a great save down to his right and keeping his side's lead.
That was another victory for St. Pauli and that's three wins in a row in the league, defeating tough tests such as Karlsruher SC, Greuther Fürth and now RB Leipzig. Up next is a slightly easier test as they face FSV Frankfurt, however it could well be the banana skin in which they slip on. As for Leipzig that was their first defeat of the season and they'll have to pick themselves up for their trip to nearby Union Berlin.
