A late show at the Wildparkstadion rescued what was a drab affair between in the Baden derby.

The sides went into this derby match with extremely contrasting fortunes. The home side have only won twice all season and began the match in a miserable 14th spot. Freiburg, however, are unbeaten in 5 and have only lost once all season, to current leaders VfL Bochum.

The home side were forced into making one alteration, with Renè Vollath replacing the injured Dirk Orlishausen between the sticks.

For the visitors, there was just one tactical change. Karim Guédé replacing Lucas Hufnagel, as Christian Streich so often opts for away from home.

First-half struggles to excite the fans

Karlsruher SC had the first effort of the match. Captain Dominic Peitz rose to meet a corner but his effort cleared Alexander Schwolow's crossbar.

Dimitrij Nazarov was next to come close, again for the home side. He picked the ball up about 30 yards from goal and drove a ferocious effort just wide of Schwolow's left post. The home side were certainly up for the fight.

It wasn't until the 26th minute that the next half chance came along. The home side again with the opportunity. A free-kick into the penalty area wasn't dealt with and a scrappy bit of play resulted in Peitz tamely heading an effort into Schwolow's hands.

Quickly after, Nazarov went close twice in succession. A ball whipped into the area from Hiroki Yamada saw Nazarov climb highest and direct his header just wide of the upright. Then, moments later, a corner fell to him on the edge of the 18 yard-box and he drilled a half-volley over the bar. KSC firmly in control at this point with the away side barely having a sight of goal.

In the 35th minute, Freiburg finally had their first real chance of note. Amir Abrashi won the ball fairly on the edge of his penalty area before playing in Mike Frantz, who ran a distance before finding top scorer Nils Petersen in the box, but he directed his volley over the crossbar under pressure.

Late drama can't separate the sides

In stark contrast to the first-half, Freiburg took less than a minute to register their first shot of the second-half. Abrashi from approximately 25 yards bent his effort wide of the upright.

Karlsruhe it was who were next to go close. Again, Nazarov was almost the beneficiary. The ball broke kindly and he drilled an effort from distance, forcing Schwolow into a save low to his right.

In the 66th minute, the home side went close again. Erwin Hoffer sprinted through before cutting back inside and firing an effort into Schwolow.

Schwolow was again to thank in the 72nd minute when he was forced into a fine instinctive save from close range. A powerful header from a corner ensured the Freiburg stopper was at full stretch to deny Kalrsruhe taking the lead. KSC were posing a real threat at this point, despite an improved second-half performance from Freiburg.

It wasn't until the 90th minute that the game finally sprung to life. Freiburg earned themselves a corner right on the stroke of 90 minutes, and Vincenzo Grifo whipped a ball to the near post which was met by Nils Petersen, who directed his header beyond the Karlsruhe stopper to give Freiburg a late, and somewhat undeserved, lead. 0-1 to the visitors.

However, the lead was short-lived. In the second minute of stoppage time, substitute Vadim Manzon rescued the home side a point as he struck past the helpless Schwolow after a scramble in the box. A deserved equaliser for the home side who would've been hard done by to come out of the game with nothing.

The result means both sides remain as they were in the league table. Freiburg occupy second position, while KSC remain 14th.
