Eugen Polanski put the ball into the back of his own net on the half hour mark to give Hertha BSC the 1-0 win over TSG Hoffenheim in a snowy Olympiastadion
While Hoffenheim sat back and put up a strong defensive wall, the hosts were able to move the ball around nice and crisp in the early stages of the match but had nothing to show for the possession.
A half-chance arose for Hertha 17 minutes into the proceedings when Genki Haraguchi played a low-diagonal ball towards the middle of the eighteen yard box. Salomon Kalou was waiting in space but did not connect cleanly and his effort fell extremely wide of goal.
Marvin Plattenhardt sent in a delicious cross from the left side of the pitch in the 26th minute narrowly missing the head of the Ivorian striker. Had there been any sort of contact, the visiting goalkeeper would have had some work to do to keep things level.
Hoffenheim blunder see's Hertha lead
Plattenhardt was involved early and often in the opening stanza of the night and with five minutes left until the halftime interval and whipped in another dangerous cross, however Kalou did not make his run early enough to get on the end of it.
The goal finally came, after some pressure had been building for Hertha in the first 30 minutes. A delivery was sent in by Plattenhardt off of a free kick and the ball hit off the back of Eugen Polanski's head and trickled into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
Hoffenheim's pressure comes to nothing
In the beginning stages of the second half, the visitors faired a bit better, controlling the ball and pushing the Hertha defense further and further back down the pitch.
Perhaps the best chance of the match came with 15 minutes remaining as a ball played back towards the in-form Kevin Volland was hit first-time but it soared over the top of the cross bar.
Eduardo Vargas finally got involved in a dangerous move in the 81st minute following a short corner. Steven Zuber whipped in a dangerous cross with his left foot and the Chilean nearly found the target but missed wide.
There was nearly a second own goal of the night deep into stoppage time. American central defender John Brooks was only trying to clear his lines but he almost put the driven cross into the back of his own net but it goes inches wide.
Huub Stevens will be pleased with the way his side played during the second half of the match as they held the majority of the possession. But Polanski will be kicking himself for that own goal as his side could have earned another nil-nil draw if it was not for his error.
TSG Hoffenheim's form continues to suffer in all competitions and have won just one league game and continues to sit at the bottom of the table. On the other hand, this win puts BSC back in the fourth position of the table, one point ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach and one point behind Wolfsburg.
