On Wednesday, 1. FSV Mainz 05 rounded off their busy day of busy with the announcement that Pablo de Blasis had extended his contract with the club.

Originally expiring at the end of this season, de Blasis has now committed to the Karnevalsverein until 2018 with the option of a further year.

The Argentine midfielder has been an important part of Mainz's recent success, and this deal will continue that trend.

Mainz making moves to solidify top six spot

After Thomas Tuchel took the club into Europe in his final season in charge, Kasper Hjulmand was tasked with dealing with the qualifiers.

Unfortunately, a plucky Asteras Tripolis dumped them out with a certain Argentine winger getting the goal and assist to take them through; it was de Blasis.

Mainz, after experiencing what he could do first hand, agreed a deal to bring him to the Opel Arena and he hasn't looked back since.

After a tough start under Hjulmand, Martin Schmidt rescued that season and brought them back to six last term to take them automatically into the group stages.

De Blasis has been a constant in that time, making 28 league appearances and notching up four goals and assists to boot.

Now handed a further season, perhaps even another, to showcase his skills, the 28-year-old is hoping for bigger and better things.

The Argentine attack has his say

De Blasis spoke to the club website on the move, and said: "I feel right at home here in this team and this city."

He added, "I am really looking forward to the challenges that face us both in the Bundesliga and the Europa League this year."

The attacker added, "I am also delighted that I can continue working with my fantastic teammates and also the fans, who are a great motivation for me."
