FC Augsburg got of the mark with their first win in the Bundesliga on matchday two by coming from behind to defeat their hosts Werder Bremen 2-1 at the Weserstadion.

Bremen took the lead just before half-time through a penalty scored by Aron Jóhannsson. The visitors though came out strong at the start of the second half and goals from Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Kostas Stafylidis turned the game on it's head and gave the away side the three points.

The hosts, on other hand, were defeated for second successive week to give them problems so early into the season as they know they must bounce back quickly.

Slow start to the game

Both teams started the game slowly as they tried to settle into the game at their own pace. It also didn't help that there was a lot of niggly fouls in the opening half an hour of the game.

The first big chance of the game finally came just after that though for the visitors as Alfreð Finnbogason was played in on goal one on one with Felix Wiedwald. The striker tried to chip the goalkeeper first time and put it in the right-hand side of the goal but the ball just dropped anxiously wide of the goal.

This chance seemed to wake the home side up and they really should have taken the lead when Serge Gnabry played a lovely pass into the path of Fin Bartels, who was unmarked at the back post, but somehow instead of putting the ball into the back of the net he smashed the ball over the bar.

Jóhannsson gave the home side a half-time lead

Luckily though for Bartels, the home side managed to get the first goal of the game in injury time at the end of the first half through a penalty. Martin Hinteregger was the offender for the visitors when he brought down Zlatko Junuzović inside the box. Jóhannsson stepped up to take it and he confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give his side a precious lead at half-time.

Goals from Gouweleeuw and Stafylidis turn the game around for the visitors

The visitors though came out fast at the start of the second half and they were rewarded with an equaliser for plugging away at the host's goal. The goal came from a dangerous corner that was whipped into the box that found Gouweleeuw unmarked and the big centre-back powered his header into the net to give his side the equaliser.

The home side managed to take the sting out of the game for a brief period of time but the visitors came again and managed to create another big chance when quick thinking from a throw-in found Koo Ja-Cheol one on one with Wiedwald. The midfielder tried to slot the ball past the keeper but he stood up strong to keep it out.

The second goal did deservedly come though for the visitors from a bullet of a free-kick from Stafylidis. A free-kick was awarded to visitors when it looked like the contact was made inside the box. It didn't matter though as Stafylidis smashed the ball into the top corner leaving Wiedwald helpless.

Augsburg should have had a third not long after that as brilliant work from Dong-won Ji found Caiuby at the back post from a cross but the winger hit his shot into the ground and it went over the bar.

The home side to need to bounce back next time round

The rest of the game saw the home side push forward for an equaliser but they couldn't manage it as they fell to their second successive defeat of the season.
