FC Schalke 04 suffered a damaging defeat last week in the Revierderby, leaving them without a win in their last seven games in all competitions, collecting just one point from their last four league games.

The situation at Augsburg is not much different, five defeats in their last six games leave them just four points off the relegation play-off place.

Wolfsburg were the latest to inflict defeat on the Bavarian club as Daniel Ginczek scored in added time to solidify The Wolves as a contender for Europe.

With that in mind, and Schalke still just two points away from the last Europa League spot, both teams will be desperate for three points.

A favourable match-up for Schalke

The last time these two teams met they played out a five-goal thriller, with Schalke coming from behind to win thanks to a late Amine Harit winner.

That win meant that Augsburg have only won once in 17 matches against Schalke, meaning they have a better record against the champions Bayern Munich than they do against the Royal Blues.

Their run of results against Augsburg is currently their best run against any team, winning four and drawing four of their last eight encounters against Heiko Herrlich's side.

Team news

Harit won’t be able to inflict more damage on Augsburg on Sunday, as he along with Omar Mascarell and Jean-Clair Tobido are likely to miss the game through injury.

Forwards Julian Schieber and Alfred Finbogason, who scored against Schalke in November are also likely to miss the clash due to calf and knee injuries respectively.

Schalke have struggled to score goals this season, only four teams in the Bundesliga have scored less than their 33 and without Harit who has bagged six this season from midfield, finding the net remains a struggle.

However, if they are to score against anyone it will likely be Augsburg, who they have always matched up favourably against in the top flight.
