Hosts Qatar are on the verge of World Cup elimination after a 3-1 defeat to Senegal

Mohammed Muntari scored a consolation but goals from Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Bamba Dieng ensured victory for the Lions of Teranga.

The result leaves the Africans in third place and Qatar in last with zero points and a minus-four goal difference after two games.

As a result, the hosts will be out of the tournament if the Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador.

  • Story of the Game

After a poor game in the opening clash with Ecuador, Qatar goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb was dropped for Meshaal Barsham

Ismaila Sarr had the first chance of the game after just six minutes, his shot from a tight angle was blocked by Assim Madibo

Senegal had the hosts pinned into their own half in the early stages but Akram Afif fizzed a shot over the crossbar after 15 minutes.

The first booking of the game came after 21 minutes, Ismail Mohamad was penalised for taking out Dia in the middle of the pitch.

Idrissa Gueye's 24th-minute strike from range was narrowly wide of the left-hand post after a one-two with Diedhiou.

Youssouf Sabaly then tried his luck from range but his first-time effort was wide of the near post.

Dia then picked up the second booking of the match after colliding with Homan Ahmed.

Qatar had a penalty shout in the 33rd minute when Afif and Sarr collided, but the referee waved away appeals and it was not checked by VAR.

Senegal then made the breakthrough, Dia smashed home after Boualem Khouki scruffed a clearance from Krepin Diatta's cross.

The second booking for the hosts went to Ahmed for a poor challenge on Sabaly.

After the break, it took just three minutes for Aliou Cissé's side to double their lead, Diedhiou got ahead of his marker and headed home from a corner.

Ismail Jakobs was the next player to go into the referee's book after catching his man with a trailing arm.

Abdelkarim Hassan's 62nd-minute effort had Edouard Mendy slightly worried and left him shouting at his defence after it flew past his left-hand post.

Just a minute later, the Chelsea goalkeeper's smart save stopped Almoez Ali from getting the hosts back into the game.

Mendy produced another save just four minutes later to deny Ismail Mohamad from close range.

Senegal made a defensive change as Diatta was replaced by Pathe Ciss and Qatar replaced Karim Boudiaf with Abdelaziz Hatem.

Goalscorer Diedhiou and Sarr were then replaced by Dieng and Iliman Ndiaye and the hosts brought on Muntari for Hasan Al-Heidos.

Substitute Muntari made an almost instant impact, reducing the deficit as he met a cross with a powerful header in the 78th minute.

Both sides then made more substitutions, Nampalys Mendy and Pape Matar Sarr replaced Jakobs and Pape Abou Cisse whilst Ahmed and Pedro Miguel were replaced by Mohammed Waad and Tarek Salman

Dieng then sealed the hosts' fate, finding space in the box and driving the ball home with just five minutes remaining.

Ciss and Madibo received late bookings, as the game wound down.

  • Player of the Match

Edouard Mendy

His saves kept Senegal in the lead with some excellent saves in the second-half as Qatar were pushing for a breakthrough.

The close-range save from Mohamed was particularly impressive.

A great performance from the Chelsea stopper after his mistakes in the first game against the Netherlands.
