Ecuador held Netherlands to a 1-1 draw in a tense thriller in Doha leaving both sides needing just a point to qualify for the knockout stages.

Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch an early lead with a stunning strike after just six minutes but Enner Valencia equalised just after the interval with a tap-in.

Ecuador were arguably the better of the two sides and had multiple chances to win the contest, they now face Senegal for a place in the round of 16.

As it stands, Netherlands and Ecuador have four points, Senegal three and Qatar zero after two matches played.

The result means that hosts Qatar are out of their own World Cup after just two Group A matches and their match with the Netherlands is a dead rubber.

  • Story of the Match

The Netherlands had the perfect start when Gakpo scored the earliest goal of the tournament so far, a stunning left-footed strike from just outside of the box.

The Dutch were comfortable for the first twenty minutes, taking the sting out of the match after their early goal.

Moises Caicedo had some joy down the left, Virgil Van Dijk intercepting his cross before it could find a teammate.

Valencia tested Andries Noppert after cutting in from the left, but the Dutch cleared the resulting corner.

Pervis Estupinan thought he had equalised on the stroke of half-time however his deflection on a strike from outside of the box was ruled out by VAR after Jackson Porozo was adjudged to have blocked Noppert's line of sight.

Immediately after the break, another VAR check gave an Ecuador goal after Valencia tapped the ball into an empty net after Noppert had saved from Estupinan.

Barcelona forward Memphis Depay replaced former Tottenham Hotspur man Steven Bergwijn after the interval and Jhegson Mendez received the first booking of the match for fouling the 28-year-old.

Ecuador came close to taking the lead on the hour mark, Gonzalo Plata thundered a left-footed curling effort onto the crossbar after Van Dijk had blocked from Valencia.

La Tricolor were in the ascendancy and Nathan Ake was forced to block from Michael Estrada after Valencia had beaten his man on the left and crossed the ball into a dangerous area.

Estrada was then replaced by Brighton's Jeremy Sarmiento as the South Americans sought a winning goal and Louis Van Gaal turned to Steven BerghuisMarten de Roon and Wout Weghorst to replace Davy Klaassen, Teun Koopmeiners and Gakpo.

With ten minutes to go, Estupinan's brilliant work down the left won a corner but Caicedo shot well over at the back-post.

The Brighton midfielder then brought down Ake in a dangerous area with five minutes remaining, but Berghuis' free-kick failed to clear the first man.

Valencia was then stretchered off with an injury, being replaced by Kevin Rodriguez, whilst Romario Ibarra replaced Plata.

Rodriguez was thrust straight into the action, when he charged down Noppert's kick and it ricocheted just over the crossbar.

Sarmiento fired in a late corner but it was headed away by Van Dijk as the action came to a close.

  • Player of the Match

Pervis Estupinan

The Brighton defender was a constant threat on the left-hand side.

He had a 91% pass accuracy, 79 touches (the joint-most of any Ecuador player), won four ground duels, made two key passes, completed all three of his long ball attempts and was dribbled past just once.

His disallowed goal would have been the icing on the cake but alas it was not meant to be, it was still a superb performance from the 24-year-old.
