The English side had a tough match ahead of them on their quest to maintain their perfect record in the 2016 European Championship Qualifiers, but eventually edged out their hosts 3-2.

England travelled to Ljubljana to take on Slovenia and they struggled to get it going when Milivoje Novakovic scored the opener for the hosts. However, two goals from Jack Wilshere appeared to change the momentum and even though Nejc Pecnik equalized, Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney lifted The Three Lions and they ended winning a game that proved to be much tougher than initially expected.

England dominate, but can't take their chances

England started the game well as they moved the ball around with ease in midfield. Fabian Delph and Wilshere looked very active in their passing but the team wasn't sharp in the final third - Rooney, Raheem Sterling and Andros Townsend lacked a bit of accuracy in the final third.

The first clear chance to score came in the 4th minute when Sterling lifted a ball over the bar, and the Liverpool youngster looked threatening once again ten minutes later but his curled effort was blocked.

Rooney drilled a shot towards the right post but Samir Handanovic made a great save in the 22nd minute. England were still dominating the match but their inaccuracy in the final third would end up costing them as Slovenia began to settle.

Slovenia grab a shock lead

The hosts started to move the ball into the opposing final third and they stunned England when they broke the deadlock nearing the end of the first half.

A delightful through ball from Josip Ilicic found Novakovic, and the striker reacted quickly to place the ball into the bottom corner past Joe Hart to send the fans into rapture.

England woke up in the second half, hit back immediately

England wanted to add a bit more pace in the second half and Roy Hodgson decided to send Adam Lallana on in the place of Phil Jones.

The substitution paid dividends rather quickly as England equalized a few minutes into the second half. Wilshere received the ball on the edge of the box and blasted a screamer straight into the top left corner, that left Handanovic with no chance. That made it 1-1, and England began to take control once more.

Hodgson's boys could've easily added another goal soon after. Sterling and Rooney combined for two consecutive chances as the Liverpool winger created two opportunities for the Manchester United star but Rooney was unable to capitalise on them.

One of those aforementioned efforts was a sitter from inside the six-yard box, that was actually easier to score than to miss.

England go ahead but are quickly pegged back

Fortunately for them, England managed to add a second goal in the 73rd minute when Wilshere doubled the team's lead. After a pass from Lallana, Wilshere placed the ball into the back of the net with another long-range screamer.

Slovenia woke up after the second goal and managed to equalize nearing the end of the second half.

Villarreal midfielder Bojan Jokic sent a superb cross into the box and substitute Pecnik powered a strong header towards the goal from the penalty spot. Hart was unable to react and suddenly it was level once again with less than 10 minutes on the clock.

It seemed as if the game was going to end in a draw but England deserved to win and they were rewarded in the final minutes when Wayne Rooney found the net.

He went one-on-one, before placing the ball into the back of the net. It was a deserved goal for England and redemption for Rooney, as he had plenty of other chances he was unable to convert.

Referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco blew the final whistle and England won 3-2, maintaining their perfect campaign through six games in the European Championship Qualifiers.

Hodgson's squad will try to take another step towards qualifying fpr the tournament when they visit San Marino on September 5th, while Slovenia will try to bounce back against Switzerland on the same day.
