Swiss striker Admir Mehmedi started up front for the visitors while young keeper Timo Horn remained in goal for the hosts after his cup penalty shoot-out heroics in the week.

It was a cagey first half with very few chances created, this was due to a combination of both teams being well organised but unable to create or show any real attacking flair. The two main chances fell to Darida and Yuya Osako. Darida failed to get his effort on target when the ball was pulled back to him in the centre of the area. While Osako’s athletic attempt went narrowly past the near post at the other end.

There was a goal just five minutes into the second half when a penalty was given for a handball. Darida dispatched his penalty into the bottom right corner to open the scoring. It was nearly 2-0 when Freis’ half-volley from the inside the area hit the side netting, Horn did well to come out quickly to put the striker under pressure.

Horn was in action again soon after, parrying a fierce strike from Darida over the bar. Substitute Mike Frantz should have sealed it late on but could not get the right contact on a low cross at the back post. Effzeh had plenty of the ball late on but never fashioned out a decent chance, and the win was comfortable for the side from the South.
